When there’s only four slots left, you have to be “the one.” And on Tuesday night’s (March 11) final blind audition round of “The Voice,” Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher and Blake Shelton weren’t going to turn their chairs around for just anyone.
It was leave-it-all-on-the-stage time for the final contestants, with all four judges filling their season’s rosters, confident they had a winner in the bunch. Here are some of the night’s highlights:
You Do You
Wichita, Kansas native Kaleigh Glanton, 20, learned the subtle nuances of classical guitar from her dad growing up, then got ripped thanks to the body-punishing CrossFit workout. It took less than 10 seconds for Adam to turn around when he heard her supple vocals on Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain.” By 90 seconds, all four judges had spun around with Levine saying she was good, but needed work and Shakira praising her “quirky” voice. But Glanton was won over by Shelton’s vow to put a spotlight on her already unique style. Welcome to the very diverse Team Blake, Kaleigh.
Usher Makes Up A Word For The Win
Nursing student Brittnee Camelle, 23, was willing to give up her scholarship for a shot on “The Voice.” And it was clear from her powerful take on Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper” why: she’s got serious skills. Usher heard something “genuine” in her tone and he appreciated the impressive risk Brittnee took in taking on the high notes. Shelton encouraged Camelle to go with Shakira, who said she could help the singer master all the moves and looks a female artist needs to succeed. In the end, though, Camelle went with Team Usher, after the singer promised he didn’t just understand her desire to inspire other women, he “overstands” it.
Who Has Miranda Lambert On Speed Dial Again?
Country hopeful Lindsay Bruce, 25, said she’s used tragedy in her life to motivate her songwriting. Adam and Shakira could clearly hear the heartache in her voice on the Eli Young Band’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” spinning around to watch the statuesque blonde power her way through the country hit. “Some of the best singers in the world are country singers,” Levine said, jokingly excluding Shelton. He praised her “stunning” control, while Shakira found kinship in their shared quick vibrato. “We’re meant to be together,” she said. Plus, Shakira’s got Miranda Lambert’s personal phone number, so Team Shakira it was.
Forget Push Ups, It’s Donut Time!
Home-taught musician and donut shop worker Caleb Elder, 19, is a self-professed shy guy. You wouldn’t know that by his soulful yelps and howls on King Floyd’s classic 1970 R&B hit “Groove Me.” Levine was clearly won over by Elder’s smooth, confident stage presence and crystalline vocals. “Our coaching relationship started 10 seconds after you sang and almost lost your mind,” Levine said about Elder’s freak out when he saw Adam’s chair spin. And, just like that, instead of having to do calisthenics as part of Team Usher, Caleb and his donuts were welcomed to Team Adam.
With their squads completed, next week’s shows will have the new teammates squaring off in the “Hunger Games”-esque battle rounds. Joining them to mentor be Lambert, The Band Perry, Aloe Blacc and Jill Scott.
