‘Walking Dead’ Could Last Ten Years Or More, Showrunner Says

“Ten more years! Ten more years! Ten more years!”

That’s the translated chanting of millions of gathered walkers, groaning with one unified, ghastly voice in response to the news that could live on for more than a decade.

That’s right: ten-plus years of “Walking Dead.” At least, that’s a possibility as envisioned by Scott M. Gimple, the current show runner of the AMC zombie series.

“As a TV show, all TV shows end, but I will say, I think it’s possible that it could go on and on and on,” Gimple said in a recent interview with Larry King (via Dark Horizons). “I think if it went ten years, if it went longer than that, it’s possible that the cast — considering the amount of deaths on this cast and everything else — after ten, twelve years, it could shift into a whole new cast.”

Ten, twelve years of “Walking Dead”? Crazy talk! Perhaps not so crazy when you consider that other live-action shows have lasted longer — not many, but some — and also not so crazy given Gimple’s own admission that a ten-year “Walking Dead” plan would have to move on from the core cast members we’ve come to know and worry about, like Rick and Michonne and the rest.

Even if we don’t see the flagship “Walking Dead” series last for more than ten years, chances are good that zombie fever will be with us for well over a decade, thanks to the “Walking Dead” spinoff series that’s currently in the works. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get a “Walking Dead” spinoff spinoff. And then a spinoff of that spinoff, and so on and so forth until we’re all as brain-dead and flesh-hungry as the walkers.

Can you handle ten more years of “The Walking Dead,” or is that crazy?
