Watch The ‘Fault In Our Stars’ Scene The Director Was Most Nervous About

We’ve already swooned all over Ansel Elgort’s impromptu tap-dancing performance on last night’s “Tonight Show,” but we have not even talked about the clip from “The Fault In Our Stars” that he introduced on the show as well.

The clip is actually something of an important scene for the story: Isaac (Nat Wolff) has just been dumped by his long-term girlfriend, while Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Elgort) are just beginning their own friendship. While the two of them discuss Hazel’s favorite book, “An Imperial Affliction,” Isaac rages in the background, destroying Gus’s unloved basketball trophies. Pain, as it turns out, demands to be felt.

“The Fault In Our Stars” director Josh Boone also admitted to MTV News that this was the scene he was most nervous about getting right on-screen, lest he invoke the ire of fans of the John Green novel from which the movie is adapted.

“I was terrified,” Boone said of the scene. “I didn’t know if it was gonna work, I didn’t know if it was gonna be too big. I just didn’t know if we were going to be able to pay enough attention to what they were talking about, which was important, at the same time as he was breaking all these trophies.”

It also contains what Boone said was his favorite line of improv from Wolff: “He holds up the really, really big trophy and to Gus is like, ‘yo, Gus, can I –’ and Gus is like, ‘yeah,’ and he just throws it down like that. Just murders it.”

Check out the clip above. “The Fault In Our Stars” hits theaters June 6. Bring your tissues.
