Some people watch the Super Bowl for the ads or the halftime show , and some tune in for the game. But when it’s a blowout like Sunday night’s rout by the Seattle Seahawks, well, the ads are kind of all you have left.
And while many of the commercials this year fell as flat as the Denver Broncos’ opening offensive series, a number featured songs that inspired, surprised and sent fans rushing to their phones and tablets.
But what were those tunes? We break down some of the musical highlights of Sunday night’s ads:
Song: Zedd, “Find You”
Where you know it from: A 15-second snippet of the new single from the EDM producer/Grammy winner debuted during last weekend’s music awards show. But Sunday night saw a 30-second version of the song with vocals from Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant in a Bud Light Platinum spot.
Song: U2, “Invisible”
Where you know it from: The rock icons debuted the inspiring song from their upcoming album as part of a promotion for the (RED) charity, which fights AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis worldwide.
Song: Aloe Blacc, “Can You Do This”
Where you know it from: The singer most people know from Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” got one of the most prominent spots during the game when his soul pop tune was the one Ellen DeGeneres chose during a three bears-themed Beats Music service commercial.
Song: Passenger, “Let Her Go”
Where you know it from: The plaintive pop tune, already a huge hit worldwide, was the soundtrack to one of the most talked-about ads of the night, the Budweiser Clydesdales spot featuring adorable puppies.
Song: Afrojack, “Ten Feet Tall”
Where you know it from: The fresh, pounding track from the EDM producer’s upcoming album was in yet another Bud Light ad, with free copies handed out to the first 500,000 people to Shazam the song featuring vocals from Wrabel.
Song: Ane Brun, “Don’t Leave”
Where you know it from: You probably don’t, since it came from the Norwegian singer/songwriter’s
little-known 2008 Changing of the Seasons album. The soulful ballad served as poignant accompaniment to a touching Chevrolet ad celebrating cancer survivors.
Song: OneRepublic, “Counting Stars”
Where you know it form: Like Passenger, OneRepublic’s song is already a hit and it got even more shine Sunday as part of the Bud Light “Epic Night” commercial with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Don Cheadle and Minka Kelly. Bonus for the band, they appear as themselves at the end of the ad.
Song: Hot Chocolate, “You Sexy Thing”
Where you know it from: Ask your mom. The 1975 top 3 hit for the British funk group was the bedroom music for an unlikely Chevrolet tale of romance between a man’s truck and a “very eligible” bachelor bull.
