If you were offline all day yesterday, then you missed an all-day extravaganza of goodness — or badness, or even ugliness, depending on your vantage point.
Empire Magazine unleashed 25 different covers featuring characters from director Bryan Singer’s “X-Men” sequel, with everyone represented from Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique to the very first Sentinel design. Some of the characters looked much better than others. Some of the characters are best not discussed at all. But let’s throw caution to the wind and talk about them all anyway, shall we?
Read on for our picks of the good, the bad, and the ugly of the “Days of Future Past” covers.
The Good
1. Both Sets of Magneto: It’s hard to mess with the Master of Magnetism. Whether he’s the dapper young Michael Fassbender of the past, or the seasoned Ian McKellen of the future, Magneto looks great, full-stop.
2. Both Sets of Xavier: Likewise, it’s hard to make Chuck look rough, even when he has the shaggy-haired appearance of James McAvoy. Major credit to future Professor X’s rocket-chair, too. How do we get our hands on one of those?
3. The Future Soldiers: The franchise’s future players all look great, for the most part. Bingbing Fan as Blink, Adan Canto as Sunspot and Booboo Stewart as Warpath all feel like they were ripped straight out of the pages of Marvel Comics. Omar Sy is the spitting image of Bishop from the comics, too. Even if the X-Men’s future is bleak, at least it looks pretty.
The Bad
1. Havok: Sometimes, Photoshop isn’t your friend. Such is the case with Lucas Till’s Havok, who appears rather stoic and lifeless in his Empire cover. It doesn’t help that Havok is rather wooden to begin with, but the cover does not help his case at all.
2. Rogue: It’s sad, because Anna Paquin actually looks rather marvelous as the power-absorbing mutant Rogue. Her all-silver costume is the best look for the character yet, at least as far as the movies are concerned. The problem is, well, Rogue’s not in the movie, not anymore. Why give her a cover? Just to pour salt in Rogue fans’ wounds? Bad form!
3. The Sentinel Mark I: Bolivar Trask’s first Sentinel design isn’t necessarily what fans of the comics were hoping to see. These Sentinels look a bit more like Michael Bay’s “Transformers” than the giant mutant-hunters of the comic books. But the worst grievance of all is the engineer featured on the cover. Get that guy out of there!
The Ugly
1. The Future Sentinel: Even worse than the Mark I is the Future Sentinel. It seems that in the future, Sentinels don’t care much about their hygiene. Seriously, look at all that hair! The Future Sentinel looks more like a “Shadows of the Colossus” bad guy than it does a Sentinel. Not a good look.
2. Beast: It’s not easy to make Nicholas Hoult look bad. Shoddily conceived blue fur makeup will do the trick. He didn’t look good in Beast mode in “X-Men: First Class,” and he looks even uglier here. Here’s hoping we see more “Human Hank” than “Beast Hank” in “Days of Future Past.”
3. Quicksilver: Really, there are no words. Let’s just say that Joss Whedon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” have a low bar to clear when it comes to Pietro Maximoff.
