It’s official: Marvel believes in
Last week, ABC confirmed plans to pursue an “Agent Carter” TV series, spinning out of the “Agent Carter” One-Shot included on the “Iron Man 3” Blu-ray last year. Hayley Atwell originated the role of Peggy Carter, secret agent and Captain America’s former flame. It’s expected she’ll continue the role when “Agent Carter” rolls out, presumably sometime in the fall.
Beyond Peggy’s central role, however, little to nothing is known about the story of “Agent Carter” — which means there’s plenty of time to get our casting wish-list out into the world! Here are seven Marvel heroes (well, six heroes and one villain) we want to see alongside Peggy on “Agent Carter.”
Captain America
Let’s start with the big gun, shall we? Unlike “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” an “Agent Carter” TV series stars a character with a very strong and very direct connection to one of the Marvel movie heroes. Without Steve Rogers, we wouldn’t have met Peggy Carter. It’s hard to imagine “Agent Carter” existing without a Captain America cameo and flashback here and there, given how much time is covered over the course of “The First Avenger.” Evans is an understandably expensive and busy man, but hopefully not too expensive and busy to log a few guest appearances here and there.
Dum Dum Dugan
And the rest of the Howling Commandos while we’re at it, but Dum Dum’s number one. Neal McDonough is too great of an actor, and Dum Dum too great of a character, to waste on just one brief Marvel movie appearance. Bring McDonough and Dum Dum to life on a weekly basis alongside Peggy, and all will be forgiven.
Howard Stark
Dominic Cooper claims he wants to be a part of the “Agent Carter” TV series, if only to keep playing Howard Stark. Why not let him, Marvel? If Cooper is offering his Stark services on a regularly televised basis, only a fool would turn him away.
Nick Fury
Samuel L. Jackson was born in 1948. If “Agent Carter” takes place in the late 40s or early 50s, then we’re talking about Baby Fury here. But Baby Fury is better than no Fury. And if the show can speed things along and take a trip to, say, the 1960s or 70s, we could get a young Agent Fury to go with our “Agent Carter.”
Hank “Ant-Man” Pym
Speaking of the 1960s, how about a visit from the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym? Sure, he’s played by Michael Douglas in Edgar Wright’s upcoming movie, and there’s little chance of seeing Douglas on a network show like “Agent Carter.” But Douglas could voice the masked Ant-Man, couldn’t he? It could be a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance, and not just because of the superhero’s shrinking size.
Loki
“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” already has plans to bring one Asgardian into the mix, in the form of Lady Sif. Can the new Marvel-ABC series top Sif’s appearance by way of the God of Mischief? Tom Hiddleston loves playing Loki, yet there’s no planned appearances for him in sight, save for maybe a third “Thor.” The timeless Asgardian could appear in the 1940s with ease.
Agent Phil Coulson
Why the hell not? The man survived death. What’s a little time-travel between friends? BadassDigest.com floated an interesting theory that “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” could end this season, paving the way for “Agent Carter” to take its place next year. If that’s the case, Coulson could be the holdover, somehow finding himself back in time and alongside Agent Carter. It’s a little bit of a leap, but only a little bit. In a world where superheroes and resurrection are part of the zeitgeist, some temporal displacement would hardly be the weirdest thing anyone’s ever seen.
