The lady of the night at the MTV Movie Awards was the show’s multi-talented mistress of ceremonies Rebel Wilson, who proved she could crack jokes, sing, levitate, puppeteer and manage embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions like a pro.
Following in the formidable footsteps of Movie Awards host predecessors like Russell Brand, Jason Sudeikis, Aziz Ansari and Andy Samberg, the ceremony’s fearless leader — known for — brought the funny (specifically, a plethora of pubic-related puns) with raunchy comedy gags and elaborate costume changes during the show. Here are some of our favorite Rebelicious moments from last night’s Golden Popcorn statuette-laden festivities:
A Very Aussie Open
Wilson can officially call herself the first MTV Movie Awards host hand-picked by James Franco, who traveled all the way to the Australian outback to coax her into helming the ceremony. After interrupting a hot pink, koala-printed sweatsuit-clad Wilson from her “sitabout,” which she described as “a walkabout with no cardio,” Franco challenged Wilson with being “the greatest Australian female host in MTV history,” before presenting her travel accommodations: a pink-embellished Iron Man suit dubbed “Iron Mangina.” After exclaiming, “Check out my iron wedgie!” Wilson levitated — and then crash landed — at the Movie Awards venue, promptly entering into a medley involving various ‘Pitch Perfect’ co-stars, synchronized dancing to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and a well-timed “Les Miz” joke. She unveiled a racy black leather outfit from beneath her sweatsuit, wielded nunchucks and capped it all off with a bleeped-out proclamation from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” hook.
Shirtless Water Boys
Wilson’s hydration was of utmost importance — second only to her thirst for bare male flesh. She employed the assistance of not one, but two shirtless water boys — a svelte, toned H2O butler she dubbed “hunky” and a slightly softer version who she affectionately referred to as “chunky.” Only the best for comedy royalty!
Quvenzhané Versus Koala Cam
In keeping with the evening’s decidedly below-the-belt-centric gags, Wilson introduced a stuffed koala named Chlamydia, who she paraded into the audience. The walkabout started with Koala-cam-vision jabs to Best Villain winner Tom Hiddleston and his “Avengers” co-star Chris Evans, but the real fun blossomed when she moved on to the youngest Oscar nominee ever — and the evening’s Breakthrough Performance nominee — “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star Quvenzhané Wallis. While admiring the petite actress’ adorable kitten purse, the Koala-cam quickly switched to a faux internal shot of the bag, featuring a plethora of alcohol bottles. Wilson joked, “Maybe your next movie will be ‘Beasts of the Southern Comfort,’ ” as Wallis somberly shook her head in the negative. We’re pretty sure Hushpuppy would not approve!
Cameos That Never Were
Wilson unveiled some “lost footage” of “what could’ve been my proudest moments caught on film,” revealing hilariously pieced-in fake cameos during some of the year’s biggest cinematic hits. First up was a role as an interrupting prostitute during Anne Hathaway’s infamous (and Oscar-winning) “I Dreamed a Dream” performance from “Les Miserables,” where she was chastised for massaging her breasts and attempting to sing along “so that Anne could keep on pitch.” Next, she donned a tiger suit to embody an Indian-accented Richard Parker alongside Suraj Sharma in Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” but the best moment came when she dropped in on a scene of “Magic Mike” as a stripper dancing to Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It” while birthing a plastic baby.
A Golden Popcorn Of Her Own
After being crowned winner of the evening’s Breakthrough Performance award, Wilson joked, “Some people say they don’t do it for the awards, but I do. I do acting for the awards… and cash money.” She then taunted Zac Efron, who was waiting in the wings to present the next award. “The only thing that would make this better is if Zac Efron took off his shirt right now and came and kissed me!” We’re with you, Rebel — if only he’d acquiesced!
Her Janet Jackson Moment
After the winner of Best Hero was announced, Wilson emerged in a new outfit — a knee-length sequined dress with peek-a-boo cutouts around the collar. As she announced, on a more serious note, that she wanted to discuss her own personal struggles with body shame, the left-most flap of her dress fell open, revealing two nipples. Too bad Justin Timberlake wasn’t available to give a girl a hand (or two)!
