29 Mind-Blowing Theories About Your Favorite Movies

by 27 mins ago

If there’s one thing fans love, it’s a good mythology.

That’s why Marvel, Joss Whedon and others who pay such close attention to their universe’s connectedness are so revered by their fans.

But if there’s one thing fans love even more than a great mythology, it’s making up their own for their favorite movies… And some of them are actually pretty amazing.

Here are 29 of the most mind-blowing fan theories, which may change the way you watch these movies forever:

1. James Bond Is Just A Code Name

For someone who’s supposed to be a secret agent, James Bond isn’t so secret. In fact, he takes the opportunity, at least once a movie, to introduce himself, real name and all, to prospective lovers and enemies.

But that’s all erased by the brilliant fan theory that James Bond, like the 007 moniker, is just a code name. Not only does it explain why telling people his name doesn’t endanger himself or reveal much about his identity, it also explains why he hasn’t aged a day between “Dr. No” and “Skyfall;” and why he’s played by a number of different people.

2. Mary Poppins Is A Time Lord

She’s perfect, she dresses like The Doctor, her bag has the same physics as TARDIS, she helps people, never stays for long, has a magic/science fiction-y umbrella, and she essentially can bend the nature of time and space.

And in case you don’t believe us, there’s a whole online community dedicated to ...

‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ Releases Four Unfinished Episodes Online

by 14 mins ago

You might not believe that there are four new episodes of the recently canceled “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” available to stream online right now, but as Master Yoda would say, “That is why you fail (to watch them).”

Lucasfilm has already satiated the desires of “Clone Wars” fans by putting “The Lost Missions” on Netflix, and now they’re giving fans a taste of four unfinished, full-length, never-before-seen episodes of the show on starwars.com.

A word of caution: when I say unfinished, I mean really, really unfinished. While all the dialogue has been recorded, the animation is a storyboarded animatic, so it doesn’t quite have the crisp, unique look that made “Clone Wars” so popular.

Still, if you were yearning for more from Anakin, Obi-Wan and company, this is your chance, with 88 minutes of completely new content. It starts with “A Death on Utapau,” which continues and helps to resolve main character Ahsoka’s story arc.

And because “Clone Wars” is the gift that keeps on giving, there will also be a novel coming out in 2015 called “Star Wars: Dark Disciple” about fan favorite villain Assaj Ventress.

With all this and “Episode VII” coming out next year, it’s not too shabby a time to be a “Star Wars” fan.

‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’ Is Even Better In Black And White

by 12 mins ago

Steven Soderbergh is as busy in “retirement” as ever, and his latest project is one of his most eye-opening and fun outings yet.

Turns out, Soderbergh is a really, really big fan of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” But whereas you or I might express our love for Indiana Jones’ first adventure by blasting the classic John Williams theme or dominating the Indy category at Thursday night trivia, Soderbergh took a slightly more artistic approach to his fandom.

He sapped the entire movie of its color, making it black and white, and also made it silent, adding only some electronic music as neutral ambiance.

According to the director, taking out John Williams’ classic score, the bevy of sound effects, the whip-smart dialogue, and the gorgeous color of “Raiders” allows you to focus specifically on the staging and majesty of each individual shot, and Soderbergh, of course, is right: they’re amazing. Just look for yourself.

Spieberg’s use of shadow emphasizes the mythic nature of Indy, something you can see much better without color.

These 80s Sci-Fi Movies Got The Future Very, Very Wrong

by 5 mins ago

The 80s were an incredible decade for movie science fiction, giving us classics like “Blade Runner” and “Aliens.”

Fortunately for us, it also gave us a bunch of movies which, no matter how good they were, got the future extremely wrong. Here are the eight worst offenders.

1. “The Terminator”

Yes, it’s a phenomenal movie. No, we don’t live in a world where cybernetic organisms caused a nuclear holocaust and wage a laser-ship dominated war with the remnants of humanity. I know it’s not supposed to be until 2029, but still don’t really see the signs of that happening. Sorry, Mr. Cameron.

2. “Escape From New York”

John Carpenter’s classic takes place in 1997, which in his movie means America is a dystopia, Manhattan is a giant prison where the crime rate is out of control, and the world while in real life it meant the crime rate had gone down and Microsoft was releasing Internet Explorer 4.0.

In 1996, Carpenter tried again with “Escape from L.A.,” where he predicted the year 2013 with pretty similar results.

3. “Tron”

“Tron” doesn’t take place specifically in the future (like a few on this list, its future is of the “not too distant” variety), but posits that the most advanced video game A.I. looks something like this:

Which is basically worse graphics than any video game system before Sega Genesis. But yes, I still do wish I could drive a light cycle.

4. “Flash Gordon”

Again, this isn’t specifically the future, but it takes place in a world with telepathic ...

James Franco Wasn’t Worried About The ‘Tropic Thunder’ Rule For ‘The Sound And The Fury’

by 24 mins ago

James Franco doesn’t shy away from challenging material, as both an actor and director. First, he adapted William Faulkner’s, “As I Lay Dying” for the big screen, a book many people felt was unfilmable. Now, he’s focused his talents on another Faulkner work, “The Sound and the Fury,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie offers many different obstacles for Franco, but the biggest might have been the mentally handicapped character of Benjy, which Franco takes on for the movie. But, as he told MTV News, Franco was always going to play that part.

“I don’t think I really thought about anyone else,” Franco said, “mainly because, I don’t particularly like acting in my own movies, but if I do, it’s one less actor I have to get on board, and I know that I’ll be committed.”

With a role as tough and sensitive as Benjy, Franco added that, “It would be a lot to ask another person to do this role.”

Benjy is obviously a potentially sensitive characterization, but Franco wasn’t worried about the “Tropic Thunder” rule when it comes to mentally challenged characters, and luckily had great source material to fall back on.

“What guided me was the book, there’s a very clear description of the character in the book,” Franco said.

He was also able to help put the audience in Benjy’s shoes by filming those scenes a certain way, adding that, “The actual camerawork, framing, the editing style of my section really works with the character. ...

by 25 mins ago

Jane Levy’s Sci-Fi 60s Musical ‘Bang Bang Baby’ Is ‘Bananas’

by 8 mins ago

With Reporting By Josh Horowitz

Jane Levy has fought the undead in “Evil Dead” and, far worse, dealt with life in the suburbs in “Suburgatory,” but now the young actress faces one of her biggest obstacles to date: musical theater.

The young starlet plays, well, a young starlet in her new movie “Bang Bang Baby,” one who wants to escape her small town and become a star. It’s a classic story… at least until the human mutations come into play. I’m sorry, Jane, can you describe it better for us?

“It’s like a sci-fi musical melodrama set in the 1960s,” Levy explained when MTV News caught up with the actress at TIFF – adding that her character imagines being swept away by an Elvis-inspired singer. “She’s bananas, you find out.”

She also has to sing, something Levy was scared of and excited for at the same time.

“I did one song, we recorded it live on set, and it’s used in the movie… the rest I recorded in the studio,” Levy said. “That was a fun experience but really scary.”

Since the movie takes place in the 60s, it’s done in the style of old movies, with Levy telling us they even shot old-school, “on treadmills with a projection on the background,” which made her and her costar Justin Chatwin feel at once awestruck and a little terrified.

“Sometimes Justin Chatwin and I would look at each other and think ‘Do we need to get the hell out of here right now, what are we ...

This Might Be Daisy Ridley’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Costume

by 6 mins ago

J.J. Abrams has been surprisingly forthcoming with juicy “Star Wars: Episode VII” tidbits since he started filming the anticipated sequel. He’s given us our first look at an X-Wing, and we’ve been able to get some glimpses of the Millennium Falcon, along with a few other clues.

But there is still plenty we don’t know about the new movie, including who the new castmembers will play.

Well, we finally might have gotten a big clue, in the form of some unofficial sketches.

Slashfilm reported that the site Making Star Wars was allowed to see concept art for Daisy Ridley’s character, but weren’t allowed to share them. So they did what anyone would do in that situation: they sketched a copy themselves, and shared that.

Bounty Hunter Ridley

Bounty Hunter Ridley With Descriptions

Flightsuit Ridley

The pictures tell a few different stories and support multiple fan theories. The first one looks very reminiscent of Leia’s Boushh bounty hunter costume from “Return of the Jedi,” without the mask. Is she getting some fashion tips from her mother? If Leia is, in fact, her mother?

But the last picture, with Ridley in a flight suit, looks a lot like Luke in his flight suit. Intriguing.

For all we know, she’s dressing like a bounty hunter to avenge her dad, Boba Fett.

Who do you think Ridley plays in the movie, and what do you think of her hypothetical costume?

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’: Watch The Hilarious Blooper Reel

by 11 mins ago

It’s a tough time to be a Trekkie. “Star Trek Into Darkness” is over a year old, the potential sequel may not come out until 2016, and director J.J. Abrams jumped ship (get it?) to arch rival “Star Wars” – though he will be staying on in a Producing capacity.

Luckily, Paramount Home Video has you covered, with this hilarious blooper reel from “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

It’s a great combo of behind-the-scenes joking and bloopers, from Zoe Saldana hitting a Klingon below the belt, to Simon Pegg calling an alien a f–kface and asking him to get married, and perhaps most shocking of all, to Zachary Quinto’s Spock actually cracking a smile.

Oh, and people falling down. There’s a lot of falling down in this.

So explore the strange new world that was the “Star Trek Into Darkness” set, and enjoy.

Al Pacino Tells Us Why He Went Indie With ‘Manglehorn’

by 20 mins ago

It would be pretty easy for Al Pacino to sit back and relax. The acclaimed actor has won an Oscar, been nominated seven other times, and starred in some of the most lauded movies ever, in addition to being an accomplished stage performer. (Amazingly, he also almost played Han Solo in “Star Wars”).

Which is why it’s even more amazing that the 74-year-old actor has not one, but two films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival: “The Humbling” and “Manglehorn.”

“Manglehorn,” where Pacino plays the title character, was directed by David Gordon Green, whose very strange and unique style led to the success of “Pineapple Express,” and Pacino was eager to work with the offbeat director.

“He’s very special,” Pacino said, who also added that he was very happy to see the movie at a festival like TIFF. “The opportunity to see a movie on a big screen, you can only go to festivals to see them now. It’s rarer and rarer.”

But don’t expect a Pacino like anything you’ve seen before. “Manglehorn” has all the trademarks of David Gordon Green, and Pacino did it specifically so he could try something new.

“It feels like an experiment, which is what I liked about it, and it feels like a David Gordon Green at doing yet another different thing,” Pacino told us. “I really thought, why not go with this guy and see what it’s like doing this independent film.”
