Is Marvel Sending ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ To Outer Space?

by 05/07/14

As an agency, S.H.I.E.L.D. is dead. As an idea, it lives on in the form of Agent Phil Coulson and his five remaining subordinates: Melinda May, Leo Fitz, Gemma Simmons, Antoine Triplett and Skye.

Only one episode remains in the first season of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and it’s hard to see how it’ll all come to an end, with so many plot lines left unresolved. There’s John Garrett, the man who once called himself “The Clairvoyant,” now revealed to be the first Deathlok; dying and in need of perfecting the formula that brought Coulson back to life.

There’s Grant Ward, the duplicitous agent who seemed like a straight-laced hero, but was actually an embedded spy the whole time. Is redemption even possible for him at this point? In last night’s episode, “Ragtag,” it seemed like Ward was on the verge of turning things around — and then he shot a dog.

On top of that, Ward sent FitzSimmons to their doom, ejecting them from the Bus and letting them sink to the bottom of the ocean. It looks like the S.H.I.E.L.D. squad’s science team is about to go the way of Charlie Pace.

All of these stories will come to a head in next week’s finale, “Beginning of the End.” But where does “S.H.I.E.L.D.” go from there? “Girls” actor and incoming “Star Wars” star Adam Driver has a theory:

Could “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” head to outer space next season? It’s not only plausible, it’s likely. Consider the following:

1. Coulson was resurrected ...

Captain America Won’t Back Down From ‘Batman Vs. Superman’

by 05/07/14

For better or for worse, Steve Rogers never backs away from a fight.

Marvel’s third “Captain America” movie is currently set for a May 6, 2016 release date. That’s the same release date as “Batman Vs. Superman,” director Zack Snyder’s tentatively titled sequel to “Man of Steel.” The DC Comics adaptation flew into the May 2016 release date after abandoning a spot in the summer of 2015, which was quickly snapped up by Marvel’s “Ant-Man.” Marvel, meanwhile, already had its flag planted in the May 6 release date, before Snyder’s “Man of Steel” follow-up came along.

Needless to say, it’s been a little bit contentious, with fans eagerly waiting to see which side will blink and move from May 6. The Warner Bros.-backed “Batman Vs. Superman” doesn’t look like it’s moving, and it doesn’t appear that Marvel will, either.

During the company’s quarterly earning stockholders call this week (covered by Variety reporter Marc Graser), Disney CEO Bob Iger said Marvel “will hang on to the May opening slot for Marvel’s movies,” including the upcoming, scheduled release dates for next year’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and 2016′s “Captain America 3.”

In other words, Steve Rogers and friends are staying exactly where they are, on a collision course with two of the world’s finest and most famous superheroes in history. In two years time, fans will have to choose between this:

Or this:

You either get this:

Or this:

Minus the Superman suit, plus a Batman suit.

Or, you can be ...

‘Game Of Thrones’: 7 Predictions For Tonight’s Episode, ‘First Of His Name’

by 05/04/14

After the Purple Wedding, and the bombshell White Walker reveal last week, it looks like season four of “Game of Thrones” is nowhere near finished making its big, epic moves.

Indeed, tonight’s episode, titled “First of His Name,” is all about making moves — be it in King’s Landing, where Tyrion Lannister stands accused of killing the king; in the far north, as Jon marches toward Craster’s Keep, where Bran is being held captive by deserters of the Night’s Watch; or in the far east, where Daenerys reigns as queen of Meereen.

Here are our predictions for who will make moves on tonight’s episode.

1. Daenerys Will Make Moves
She sacked Meereen. She hung up the Targaryen flag. She’s conquered Slaver’s Bay. Now what? Now more than ever, Dany is poised to make her great Westerosi comeback — and based on the preview, it sure looks like she’s finally ready to sail home toward her birthright.

2. Cersei Will Make Moves
Last week, Margaery paid a midnight visit to the new king, Tommen Baratheon. This week, her moves aren’t going unnoticed, as Queen Regent Cersei has her eye on the pride of Tyrell. Who will win the battle of the Lion and the Rose? And just what the heck is Cersei doing palling around with Oberyn Martell, anyway?

3. Littlefinger Will Make Moves
After saving Sansa and informing her of his role in the death of Joffrey, Lord Petyr Baelish has seemingly laid all of his cards ...

Watch Andrew Garfield Crush The ‘Spider-Man’ Theme Song

by 05/02/14

What exactly does a Spider-Man do, anyway? Ask Andrew Garfield, and he might have a creative idea or two.

Last night, on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” the late night talk show host grilled Garfield on his most recent hobby: playing guitar.

“I play very simple Cat Stevens songs and very simple Neil Young songs,” said Garfield, obviously shy at the merest mention of his new lease on life as a guitarist.

But the words “Fallon” and “shy” do not go together, unless he’s appearing in a hot tub on a “Saturday Night Live” sketch. As Garfield explained his newfound interest in playing guitar, Fallon pulled the six-stringed instrument out from under his desk, and begged Garfield to give the viewers a taste.

“This is the first time I’ve ever sung in public,” Garfield grimaced, grabbing the guitar.

“We’re very nice here,” Fallon insisted. “This will be fantastic.”

Fantastic? Maybe not. Amazing? Certainly, as you can see below:

Well played, Mr. Garfield. Well played, indeed.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′: The Reviews Are In

by 05/02/14

Is Peter Parker about to hit the jackpot?

That’s the question on the mind of many box office prognosticators as “The Amazing Spider-Man 2″ finally swings into action in the United States, after spending several weeks in theaters abroad. As of now, critics are fairly divided on the “Spider-Man” sequel, with almost everyone agreeing on Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone’s electric chemistry as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, but others seeing fault in an overstuffed storyline.

Read on for our round-up of the “Amazing Spider-Man 2″ reviews.

The Story
“We begin, after a violent incident on a plane set in the past, with Spidey foiling fright-faced gangster Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti) while on the way to his alter ego’s graduation. When Peter finally drops in, his fellow graduate, girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), has just delivered a speech whose message will resonate throughout the film. But things aren’t plain sailing for the bonny pair, with Peter haunted by Gwen’s dead father’s warning him off her.

“Meanwhile, the son of Oscorp’s Norman Osborn, Harry (Dane DeHaan), is back in town, thrust into a position of power which he may abuse, particularly because of a shocking discovery he makes. Then there’s Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx), an electrical engineer for Oscorp, whose fragile mind is further frazzled by a rather unpleasant incident that will have health and safety fans wincing. There’s also the mystery of Peter Parker’s late parents, whose father may be even more important to Peter than he initially believes.” — Russell Lewin, SFX ...

Game Over, Bub: Hugh Jackman Is Done With Wolverine

by 05/01/14

Wolverine is at the end of the line.

Not only is Marvel’s most popular mutant biting the bullet (or perhaps biting a sword, or a nuke, or a Sabretooth; either way, dude’s about to die) in the comics, but now it appears that his big-screen future is in question as well.

Hugh Jackman, the Oscar-nominated man behind the claws across seven different films, says that he’s near the end of his rope as far as playing Wolverine goes. He’ll next be seen in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and after that, it’s believed Jackman will reprise the role for another solo movie with James Mangold, director of the Japan-set “The Wolverine.” But even that project isn’t a certainty.

“I’m excited to see what we can come up with, but I haven’t signed on signed on,” the actor told SFX Magazine. “I’m genuinely at that point where unless it’s better than the last one I’m not going to do it.”

That’s right: Jackman is ready to put the claws behind him for good, unless there’s a worthy reason to follow “The Wolverine.” He’s optimistic that there is at least one more story to tell, and that there’s room for improving on his most recent solo outing as Wolverine.

“I can still see where we can improve on the last one,” he said. “I don’t want to get into specifics, because it just upsets people, but there are certain parts of that story where I felt we were predictable. And ...

‘Fantastic Four’ Follows The Leader, Finds The Mole

by 05/01/14

The “Fantastic Four” reboot’s casting situation just got weird. But first, a history lesson.

In the 2005 “Fantastic Four” film, Chris Evans starred as Johnny Storm, the Human Torch. That role paved the way for his turn as Steve Rogers in the “Captain America” and “Avengers” movies, leaving some fans deeply confused as to how Evans could play both superheroes at once.

Of course, Evans’ role as Rogers meant his days as Storm were over. Indeed, they were already long behind him at that point. And now, we’re on the cusp of a brand new group of actors for the “Fantastic Four” reboot, due in theaters next year. Evans is succeeded by Michael B. Jordan as the new Human Torch, with other members of Marvel’s First Family including Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Miles Teller as Reed Richards and Jamie Bell as The Thing.

Beyond that foursome, “Fantastic Four” already has a villain: Toby Kebbell, of the upcoming “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” as the new Doctor Doom. And now, it appears he’s not the only force of terror in the new “Fantastic Four” film.

Enter the Mole Man.

Heat Vision reports that Tim Blake Nelson is joining “Fantastic Four” as Harvey Elder, described as “an eccentric and socially awkward scientist.” In the comics, Elder becomes the Mole Man, one of the more famous “Fantastic Four” villains — and one of the biggest practical jokes in comics.

Nelson is a fine actor and a welcome addition to the ...

‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Achieves ‘Iron Man’-Fueled Awesomeness

by 04/30/14

Tony Stark. Pepper Potts. Maria Hill. Man-Thing. Frickin’ Man-Thing. These are the man things that got name-checked on last night’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” titled “Nothing Personal,” which was anything but.

It was yet another rock-solid episode of the Marvel TV series, a show that struggled and struggled to find its footing in the first half of its inaugural season. But ever since “T.R.A.C.K.S.,” and especially since “Turn, Turn Turn,” the Clark Gregg-starring series has delivered the goods week in and week out — and this week was no exception.

To begin with, “Nothing Personal” brought Cobie Smulders back into the fold as Maria Hill, retired from “S.H.I.E.L.D.” due to the events of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” and now working for Stark Industries. We even see Maria field a phone call from Pepper Potts, and she name-checks Iron Man himself numerous times throughout the ep. On top of that, Maria gets her very first Marvel fight scene, and it’s a good one.

It’s an especially good fight because it’s against Glenn Talbot, the mustached jarhead played by “Heroes” expat Adrian Pasdar — yet another character from the Marvel Comics catalogue. And speaking of Marvel lore, Maria drops an outrageously obscure reference to Man-Thing. A clue that we’ll be seeing the Marvel Universe’s answer to Swamp-Thing on the small-screen, or just an Easter egg for comic readers? Either way, it was the best.

Fan service aside, “Nothing Personal” paid off hugely personal promises for longtime viewers of ...

Make Room, Daisy Ridley: There’s Another ‘Star Wars’ Female Lead

by 04/30/14

If you thought we were finished with “Star Wars” casting news this week, you were sorely mistaken.

When Disney and StarWars.com officially revealed the “Episode VII” cast list on Tuesday, fans couldn’t help but notice the overwhelmingly male-driven roster. Only Daisy Ridley, a total newcomer, stood out as the lone female actor announced as part of the film’s cast, aside from franchise veteran Carrie Fisher’s confirmed return as Leia Organa.

But that’s not the end of the story, it seems. As Yoda once famously promised, there is another.

According to Heat Vision, director J.J. Abrams still has “another substantial role to fill — and it’s a female part.” There are no details on who the character is, or why she hasn’t been announced yet. One can assume that there is no deal with any actresses just yet. Or perhaps whoever is behind the character simply couldn’t attend the London table read, for whatever reason.

Regardless, it’s a welcome sign that the cast of “Episode VII” is a bit more diverse than we were initially led to believe, even if there’s still room for improvement. Now the question evolves: who is the other female character, who is playing her, and when will we find out? Perhaps there’s still hope for the rumored Lupita Nyong’o

and Maisie Richardson-Sellers

after all.

What do you think of the latest “Star Wars” casting buzz?

Flying Solo: Harrison Ford Has ‘Gigantic’ Role In New ‘Star Wars’

With the cast of “Star Wars: Episode VII” more or less set in stone, it’s only a matter of time before we hear official word that the franchise’s original big three players — Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford — are all back in the mix.

Hamill and Fisher’s involvement in the new “Star Wars” comes as no surprise, but over the years, Ford’s relationship with the galaxy far, far away has been … icy, to put it in Hoth terms. And yet, not only is Ford back in the “Star Wars” mix, it’s also rumored that he’s involved in a “gigantic” way.

That’s how Deadline phrases it; in their rundown on the possible “Star Wars” castmembers, they mention that Ford has “a gigantic role” in “Episode VII.” That’s a pretty big left turn for the once and future pilot of the Millennium Falcon, the same guy who has barely been able to put the words “Star” and “Wars” in the same sentence without stifling a scoff.

So, what changed? What reason does Ford have to not only participate in the new “Star Wars” film, but to have a “gigantic” role in the movie? The answer is probably very big and very green, and we’re not talking about this guy:

Business reasons aside, what’s happening creatively? Is Ford finally getting his wish — an epic, fatal farewell for the galaxy’s greatest smuggler?

Another question worth pondering: Are Hamill and Fisher’s roles as “gigantic” as Ford’s? As Luke and Leia, both Hamill and Fisher are just as important to ...
