The Film Industry Just Had Its Worst Summer In 17 Years

by 43 mins ago

By Sasha Geffen

Even with the megaplexes packed with big-name sequels, Americans just didn’t seem to be going out to the movies this summer. The film industry has reported its worst numbers since 1997 as August draws to a close, according to the New York Times.

Between the first weekend in May through Labor Day weekend, box office revenues from movies in the United States and Canada have seen a definite drop from last year. This summer’s ticket sales added up to $3.9 billion, 15 percent less than sales from the same time period in 2013.

Why the dip? It seems like opening weekends for the biggest summer blockbusters just haven’t been seeing as big of a turnout as usual. The number crunchers at Vox.com added up the top opening weekends for the biggest summer movies of the last few years, and they found a $40 million difference between last summer and this one. In 2013, the opening weekends of the 11 top summer flicks earned a total of $877 million. This year, that number slumped to $833 million.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction” scored the biggest numbers of the summer with a $100 million opening weekend, followed closely by Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” with just under $100 million and the new “Godzilla.” But all three of this summer’s top movies underperformed 2013′s hottest flicks: “Iron Man 3″ opened with a $173 million weekend, while the latest Superman ...

This Is What Your Brain Is Like On Coffee

by 13 mins ago

Alright kids I know it’s a Saturday, but it’s time for a science lesson. Odds are you’ve already had a cup of coffee, or several, this morning. So here to tell us how caffeine affects your brain are the cool people at asapSCIENCE. Learning is fun I promise, and if you’re already feeling a little sluggish I highly suggest a latte would go well with reading this post. And here’s the first pour..

The Basics

When you’re awake a chemical called adenosine is produced, which binds to the receptors in your brain. This actually slows down your brain activity, making your brain feel more tired and leading you to feel fatigued throughout the day.

The First Cup

Caffeine functions similarly to adenosine, as it works its way into your bloodstream, binding with the receptors in your brains. Caffeine replaces adenosine, and doesn’t come with the sleepiness effect. You are now awake. Yay!

coffee-3

I’ll Have Another

As you become a longtime imbiber of caffeine your brain creates more adenosine receptors, and more caffeine is needed to elicit the same response. When you don’t continue to drink caffeine you start to feel withdrawal symptoms and become more tired.

Coffee = Happiness

Caffeine also stimulates adrenaline, which is the fight or flight hormone. In turn, your dopamine levels increase, which is that awesome feeling where you love life and everything is sunshine and rainbows. Your brain on coffee equals happiness, which is the best thing ever.

There’s Two Volcanoes Erupting In The World Right Now

by 15 mins ago

Sometimes it seems like volcanoes are a thing of the past. Sure, we’ve all read about Mount St. Helens erupting in 1980, or way farther back, Mount Vesuvius in ancient Pompeii, but our current world in 2014 seems removed from these natural explosions.

But they can definitely still happen. In fact, just yesterday not one but two volcanoes began erupting! The first is Mount Tavurvur, which is located just north of Australia on the island of Papau New Guinea near a city called Rabaul, and the other is Bardarbunga in Iceland.

Mount Tavurvur began to erupt on Friday morning (August 29) and ABC News reports that a bulletin from the Rabaul Volcanological Observatory pinpointed the beginning of activity around 3:30 and 4:00 a.m..

This volcano has erupted many times before, but a previous eruption in 1994 wiped out Rabaul. The 1994 eruption occurred simultaneously with that of another nearby volcano Mount Vulcan, and together the two eruptions destroyed the city that was the provincial capital. Since then, the capital was moved from Rabaul to the city of Kokopo.

Mount Tavurvur last erupted in 2013 and other eruptions have been in noted in 2011, 2010, 2006, 2005 and 2002, aside from the major 1994 one. In comparison to the eruption twenty years ago, this event is fairly small.

So far, an evacuation notice has not been issued to Rabaul, although residents in communities closer to the volcanic activity have been evacuated. Rabaul residents are advised to stay in doors and schools ...

Courtney Love Has A Draft Of Her New Memoir, But It’s ‘A Nightmare’

by 15 mins ago

By Sasha Geffen

Courtney Love is hard at work on her forthcoming memoir, but don’t expect to see it in bookstores anytime soon. The Hole frontwoman revealed in an interview with Paper Magazine that the current draft of her book The Girl with the Most Cake is presently “a disaster.”

“I never wanted to write a book in my entire life,” Love told Paper for a new feature in the magazine’s 30th anniversary issue.

But despite her reluctance to become an author, she’s already sitting on a manuscript of the autobiography, which she’s been penning with a co-writer. The book will cover Love’s life and career with the seminal grunge band Hole up until the year 2006; everything that’s happened since, she says, is nobody’s business but hers.

The widow of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, Love is currently working on getting the original lineup of Hole back together for a 2015 reunion. This past April she celebrated the 20th anniversary of her band’s critically acclaimed album Live Through This, which was released in 1994 just four days before her husband’s suicide.

Justin Bieber And Selena Gomez Rekindle Their Romance In Canada

by 6 mins ago

Alright Jelena, we’re on to you. After making some sly conclusions a few days ago that the possibility that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were back on again (from the duo selfie on the plane to his regram of her pic) could be a real thing, it looks like it definitely is.

To jog your memory, this is what we were given to start with on this goose chase three days ago.

That plane that they were on? It was headed to Biebs’ home country of Canada, where the two landed in Ontario. Maybe he took Selena along for the ride while he’s looking for some down home country inspiration for his next album? Biebs shared some snapshots from the vacay where the couple got some hang time with his fam and enjoyed the great outdoors.

Looking forlorn in a crop field a la Farmer in the Dell.

Saddling up and going horesback riding with what looks to be Selena in front of him.

After not posting any instagrams from the peaceful trip the past few days, Selena is on her way back to New York (smuggled hot Cheetos in hand).

What do you think? Are they back on? Let us know in the comments.

Celebs Are Busy Catching Stray Balls And Laughing At Trick Shots At The U.S. Open

by 6 mins ago

It’s not enough to just sit in the stands, folks. Celebrities flock to the glittering Arthur Ashe stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens to see the top players in tennis battle for the U.S. Open title, and in 2014 they’re doing work. In the midst of drinking chilled rose and propping their feet up in the boxes, they’re getting in on the game.

Alec Baldwin For The Win

We’ve already mentioned it, but it bears repeating that Alec Baldwin wins best highlight so far when he oh so casually caught a stray ball after it took an errant bounce off the court. You’ll notice the ball boys (whose job it is to corral the neon yellow objects) duck out of harm’s way, while Alec simply faces the danger head on, calling his cat-like reflexes into action and extending his two hands with ease.

His wife Hilaria quick jerks during the moment, but Alec does. not. move. Thank you Alec Baldwin, hero of the U.S. Open, from saving fellow well-outfitted patrons from a potential ball to the face.

Love Sleeping In? Doctors Agree With You

by 34 mins ago

As the back-to-school groans are mounting, it’s time to enjoy one last weekend of freedom before fall officially hits. One of the best parts about summer, obviously, is getting to sleep in—but a new study supported nationally by pediatricians indicates that early school start times, such as those before 8:30 a.m., are actually a health threats for teens.

This past Monday (August 25), the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement that called for school districts to delay their start time until 8:30 a.m. or later for middle school and high school students. This call to action is supported by the study’s findings that adolescents in America are experiencing chronic sleepiness and that it poses a threat to their academic success, health and safety.

“We want to promote safety with kids,” Dr. Cora Breuner told NPR in regards to the study’s findings. Dr. Breuner works at Seattle Children’s Hospital as an adolescent medicine specialist “We truly believe that our teenagers are getting six to seven hours of sleep a night, and they need eight to 10.”

Currently, over 40 percent of school districts begin school before 8:00 a.m. and a mere 15 percent have a start time at or after 8:30 a.m..

Dr. Judith Owens, who works at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. as a sleep researcher, wrote a more comprehensive review of the scientific evidence that the effects of insufficient sleep include health-related concerns severe as depression and increased obesity risk.

Watch Amber Rose Give Wiz Khalifa The Best No.1 Album Dance Ever

by 15 mins ago

Sorry, Nielsen SoundScan, you’ve just been one-upped!

Before today, the album sales tracking system was solely responsible for delivering Wiz Khalifa’s best week ever by tallying up the numbers to land the Pittsburg rapper’s Blacc Hollywood LP the #1 spot on the Billboard albums charts.

But that was before the “We Dem Boyz” MC’s wife Amber Rose came through with the grand twerk finale. That’s right, the blond bombshell posted the sexiest video ever on Instagram Friday (August 29) to celebrate her hubby’s first No. 1 album.

In the clip, the self-described “MILF” is wearing a blue camisole, making her glutes shimmy on beat to Wiz’s single, “A– Drop.”

“In honor of my Hubby’s #1 Album #blacchollywood #A–Drop,” she wrote in the caption.

We’ve been seeing a lot of Amber this week, as the video comes shortly after her Rose McGowan-channeling near-naked appearance on the VMA red carpet.

But of course, he had to post his own video of the celebratory twerking session.

Way to go Wiz! If these videos are going to become standard procedure, we definitely can’t wait until you get another #1!
