Jay Z’s Magna Carta Celebrates Its One-Year Anniversary: Where Does It Stand Today?

by 4 mins ago

Jay Z knows a thing or two about creating a moment. Last year on July 4, the veteran Brooklyn MC made the music world stop when he dropped his 12th solo album Magna Carta… Holy Grail.

Before fans even got to hear the 16-track LP, Hov was making headlines just based off of the album’s revolutionary release. In an unprecedented deal with Samsung, Jay made MCHG available for free to Samsung Galaxy users and earned himself a platinum plaque from the RIAA before the album even hit traditional retail outlets days later.

It was a bold move, which at the time was just important as the music that Jay released on the album. Yes, there was hype and a lot of it, but when the smoke cleared, the business-minded MC left fans with a look into his elevated lifestyle.

On “Holy Grail” he spoke of the mounting pressures of fame and on “Picasso Baby” he rapped of high-brow art (while still managing to keep it dirty). The Frank Ocean-assisted “Oceans” dealt with deep-rooted racism and classism and “Jay Z Blue” tackled the struggles of being a new father and husband. Then, of course, there were club bangers like “Tom Ford” and “F—withmeyouknowigotit.”

On the one-year anniversary of Hov’s latest, we wanted to hear from you. How do you feeling about Magna Carta… Holy Grail today?

Here’s What You Said

Mentally been many places, but I'm Brooklyn's own. Hip-hop gives me life!

Wiz Khalifa’s (Official) ‘We Dem Boyz’ Remix Is Here: Listen Now

by 17 mins ago

By Maurice Bobb

Wiz Khalifa got the fireworks started on Thursday night (July 3) when he finally let loose the highly anticipated remix to “We Dem Boyz.”

An unofficial version leaked earlier in the day, but the Pittsburgh MC has finally released the official track.

But since others have co-opted the term “remix” for the track, Wiz has elected to title his remastering of the hotter than heat rocks hit single, “We Dem Boyz Part II.”

“Real collectors get their art from the dealer,” Wiz tweeted, eschewing the unfinished versions that have leaked.

Unlike the original, though, this sonic second helping has a more relaxed vibe, with hip-hop heavyweights Rick Ross, Schoolboy Q and Nas serving up verses that are better than ribs and potato salad at a holiday BBQ.

First up is the Pittsburgh representer, who lays down the foundation with a stoner-laden rallying cry, “Hold up, hold up, we dem boyz/ Hold up, hold up, we makin’ noise.”

Next up to bat is Rozay, who passes the lyrical baton to Q, who takes the beat for a ride around the block before letting Esco weave quotable metaphors like a Savile Row seamstress.

“Understand I shine before y’all time, I been outside when T. La Rock invented rhymes/when dinnertime and BBS’s on tinted Saabs, was gettin’ robbed,” raps the Illmatic MC.

Running anchor leg, of course, is the Taylor Gang wizard of under-the-influence rhymes.

“Fresh up out a cell to the seats of private planes, roll at least an ounce a day, ...

Watch Selena Gomez’s Naughty Trailer For ‘Behaving Badly’

by 35 mins ago

By Maurice Bobb

Apparently, Selena Gomez has fully embraced her dark side.

First, it was the raunchy dramedy “Spring Breakers,” and now it’s the teens going wild comedy, “Behaving Badly.”

In the new trailer released Thursday (July 3), Gomez’s Nina Pennington is the object of Nat Wolff’s Rick Stevens’ desire and he’ll do whatever it takes to win her heart.

The clip begins with Stevens trying to catch up on his confessions. He thinks it’s only been two months since his last confession, but the priest (Jason Lee) enlightens him that it’s been over three years.

The video then flashes to the beginning when Stevens introduces himself to Pennington, only to be admonished by her ex-boyfriend as a “douchebag” who will soon be a dead man.

Meanwhile, Stevens has a cougar named Pamela (Elisabeth Shue) who is willing to, shall we say, teach him the birds and the bees.

When Stevens’ sister’s brothel/party goes beyond full tilt, Pennington wants to know, “Why are all these girls naked?”

From there, the police are called, a little person is electrocuted by a power line that was shot down and Stevens’ lawyer Annette Stratton-Osborne (Heather Graham) is called on to fix the legal mess.

“At the rate your family and friends keep going to jail, you should put me on a permanent retainer,” she says.

“Behaving Badly” toilet papers theaters on August 1.

Check Out Andre 3000 As Jimi Hendrix In The Trailer For ‘All Is By My Side’

by 23 mins ago

We’ve heard talk about Andre 3000 playing Jimi Hendrix in the upcoming film “All Is By My Side,” and we even got a taste of what it’ll look like with a short clip released earlier this year. But now we can really dig our teeth into the biopic, with the release on Thursday (July 3) of the first official trailer.

The trailer shows Three Stacks as a young Hendrix — pre-fame, in 1966-67 — as he works his way to become the legendary musician that he is now remembered as. The movie reportedly has not secured the rights to the late rocker’s music, which is much of the reason that it focuses on the years before he made it big.

Hendrix died in 1970, at the age of 27.

The film, which was written by John Ridley, who also wrote “12 Years A Slave,” opens September 26.

‘Transformers’ Producer Answers Critics Biggest Problems With ‘Age Of Extinction’

by 32 mins ago

There’s a rift growing in the world of “Transformers.”

On one side, you have the movie audience, who has shelled out nearly $1.3 billion worldwide for the series since it began in 2007, including the opening weekend grosses for this summer’s “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” On the other, you have critics, who have savaged the movies: none have been “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with “Age of Extinction” garnering the lowest rating of any of the movies so far.

In the center of that rift is producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has stewarded all four films along with director Michael Bay. On the eve of “Age Of Extinction” set to dominate theaters for a second weekend, and in the middle of a busy press week in Europe, MTV News got on the phone with di Bonaventura for a candid interview to talk about this divide, how he responds to the biggest criticisms of “Age Of Extinction” and where he sees the franchise going next.

[Note: MTV and Paramount, which releases the "Transformers" films, share a parent company.]

MTV News: First thing, obviously “Age of Extinction” had a gigantic opening weekend. It made over $300 million internationally, and I just read, I believe, that in China its up to $134.5 million, which is even out-pacing North America.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura: Well I mean, you know, you hope for this kind of result, but you don’t really dream it’s possible. That’s the honest truth.

You can be as bullish as you want about ...

Aww, Look: The Internet Wants You To Cheer Up, Superman

by 34 mins ago

Aww shucks, superkid — why so glum? What is it about Zack Snyder’s “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” that has both you and the bat one so down in the dumps? Is this, like, a seasonal affective disorder situation? (I mean, it does seem mighty rainy where you are.) Or are you just feeling generally ho-hum because it’s hard to be a superhero?

After Henry Cavill’s underpantsless superhero was revealed Thursday morning on Twitter, much of the Internet found itself concerned over the heavy emotional weight the boy from Krypton seems to be lost within. And in an uncharacteristic moment of concern, the Internet took pity on poor Kal-El and decided to cheer him up the only way they knew how: through the magic of photoshop.

Like this circus-y take:

Or this smirking equivalent of photoshop facial reconstruction:

This tender lover’s embrace kills two birds with one stone (because man oh man does Snyder seem interested in super-sad superheroes):

So cheer up, buttercup! You’re Superman — don’t let the rain get you down.

Too much exuberance for one person. Follow her on Twitter @alicialutes.

Busta Rhymes Wasn’t Going To Let Eminem Out-Rap Him: ‘F–k That’

by 13 mins ago

With reporting by James Lacsina

When Busta Rhymes asked Eminem to co-star on his new single “Calm Down,” the Dungeon Dragon got a little more than he bargained for. What started as a simple three-minute song, with a few verses and a hook, turned into a nearly six-minute rap throw down.

“Originally, the song was like three minutes and eight seconds. I had two 16-bar verses on it and the hook that’s there,” Busta explained to MTV News on Wednesday.

Busta sent the song to Em, expecting to get a standard 16-bar rhyme, but Slim Shady sent him a performance more than three times the usual length. “Eminem’s verse comes on and it’s like 42 bars,” Busta said.

The length and intensity of Em’s verse made Busta a bit uncomfortable. Though the two came to the Scoop DeVille-produced track as collaborators, Bus acknowledges that there was a “respectful competition” between them.

“You’re not just gonna mop the floor with me on my record,” Bus remembers thinking to himself. “I didn’t expect any less because that’s what Em does, but that’s what people know Busta Rhymes for doing.”

Busta says he went back to write a longer verse to match Em’s rhymes and that’s where “Calm Down” began to turn into an anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better affair. After that, the two decided that Eminem would mix the record in his Detroit studio, but after traveling to the D, the maniacal MC and music producer called an audible.

“I’m in there, Em hears the verse. He’s vibing for ...

Katy Perry’s #TBT Is Literally A Teenage Dream

by 3 hours ago

Hold the Dream Phone! Katy Perry‘s latest and greatest Throwback Thursday photo is literally a dream come true: a teenage Katy is wearing a shirt with the words “Pop Star” bedazzled on it. (I’m pretty sure I owned that same bedazzled shirt in, like, eighth grade — I think we all did.)

The only thing missing from this photo is a set of color-banded braces and latest copy of YM magazine.

Katy Perry is still hot on the trail of her nostalgia-laden Pristmatic world tour, keeping the ’90s alive and well with butterflies, smiley faces and yin-yangs galore up and down the east coast.

Disclosure Take Usher’s ‘Good Kisser’ To Third Base

by 31 mins ago

Disclosure may have just done the impossible — they may have just out-sexed Usher, the king of sexy slow jams, the man behind “Climax,” for Christ’s sake, even sexier.

Guy and Howard just put their own dance-driven electronic spin on “Good Kisser,” which Usher dropped earlier this year, introducing a steady beat that takes it from the bedroom to the club.

Earlier this year, the U.K.-based DJ duo put an equally fresh spin on Pharrell and Jay Z’s “Frontin.”
