Drake has no problem communicating his thoughts and feelings through his music, but opening up for the media been difficult for the YMCMB hitmaker. Now, Drizzy has sworn off all magazine interviews after a Rolling Stone sit-down stirred up controversy involving Kanye West.
“I’m done doing interviews for magazines. I just want to give my music to the people. That’s the only way my message gets across accurately,” Drake tweeted on Thursday (February 13) after excerpts of his RS interview leaked. A rep for Rolling Stone confirmed with MTV News that the quotes are accurate and will appear in their new issue, which features fallen actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Various blog sites are reporting that Drake took a swipe at West, criticizing his lyricism on Yeezus, specifically citing a line from the track “I’m in It.”
“There were some real questionable bars on there. Like that ‘Swaghili’ line? Come on, man. Even Fabolous wouldn’t say some sh– like that,” read an excerpt tweeted by Real Talk NY writer Nigel D.
Though still unconfirmed, the spreading news was enough to draw an early morning reaction from Drake, who denied that he ever said such a thing. “I never commented on Yeezus for my interview portion of Rolling Stone. They also took my cover from me last minute and ran the issue.” Drizzy continued on Twitter, alluding that the mag had broken some sort of cover agreement.
Kanye and Drake were at odds for years before they buried the hatchet and appeared onstage together last August at Drizzy’s OVO Fest in Toronto. “That was probably the most important moment in my career to date,” Drake had told MTV News after the show last year. “I think me and Kanye have wanted to express our respect for each other for a long time and sometimes rap, the business, the competitiveness and just the heart behind it forces you to not talk to the people you quietly admire.”
“I’m disgusted with that. RIP to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. All respect due. but the press is evil,” he wrote.
Drizzy didn’t deny his quotes about Macklemore from the same RS interview, however. On Wednesday, the magazine’s site reported that Drake believed Mack’s Grammy night tweet to Kendrick Lamar, where he apologized for winning over him was “wack as f–k.”
