Netflix has saved “The Clone Wars” from the galactic garbage compactor. The streaming service has reached a deal with Disney and Lucasfilm to pick up the unaired final season of the animated “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” series.
So get ready to binge on the adventures of Obi Wan, young apprentice Ahsoka Tano and not-yet-Darth Anakin Skywalker beginning March 7, when the final chapters of “Clone Wars” make their Netflix debut. “Clone Wars,” which ran on the Cartoon Network, was canceled last year, shortly after Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm. The last 13-episode season, called “The Lost Missions,” will chronicle Ahsoka’s departure from the Jedi order as the Jedi’s battle with the Sith lords intensifies.
The series, which takes place between two of the movie prequels — 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones and 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith — marks the first time any Star Wars content has been offered on Netflix.
Most excitingly, Yoda makes an appearance in the series and drops some knowledge about the nature of the Force and its mysterious power.
According to a release announcing the deal, “Some of the deepest mysteries of the conflict between the light and the dark sides of the Force are revealed,” in the upcoming episodes. “An intrepid clone trooper discovers a shocking secret, Anakin Skywalker’s closest relationship is tested to its limits, and what Master Yoda discovers while investigating the disappearance of a Jedi could forever change the balance of power in the galaxy.”
It’s just the first part of a deal between Disney and Netflix that will bring all five pervious seasons of “Clone Wars” to the service, as well as director’s cut episodes of seasons 1-5 and the Clones movie. Beginning in 2016, Netflix will also be the exclusive streaming destination for first-run, live-action and animated moves from a number of Disney subsidiaries, including Lucasfilm, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and Marvel Studios.
It’s just the latest bit of excitement in the “Star Wars” universe. Last week it was announced that the upcoming TV series will also include a movie and a collection of shorts to air on the Disney Channel.
