Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death on Sunday has prompted a virtually endless outpouring of support and remembrances for the late actor’s life and career. Indeed, Hoffman’s colleagues on one of his final projects — the two-part “Hunger Games” finale, “Mockingjay” — have released a joint statement to convey their feelings of devastation over the Oscar-winning actor’s passing.
“Words cannot convey the devastating loss we are all feeling right now,” reads a statement issued by star Jennifer Lawrence, director Francis Lawrence, author Suzanne Collins and others, on behalf of the “Hunger Games” cast and crew. “Philip was a wonderful person and an exceptional talent, and our hearts are breaking. Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to his family.”
The statement follows a separate statement released by Lionsgate, the studio responsible for the “Hunger Games” franchise. A Lionsgate spokesperson called Hoffman “a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation.”
It’s been reported that Hoffman’s work on the “Hunger Games” films as rebel leader Plutarch Heavensbee was largely complete. Hoffman only had seven days left to shoot for “Mockingjay Part II,” and it is believed that his death won’t alter the films’ production schedules and release dates.
Beyond the “Hunger Games” franchise, Hoffman was recently set to lead the new Showtime series “Happyish,” playing an advertising executive forced to confront unpleasant changes in his life and industry. Showtime released a statement on Hoffman’s passing, saying, “Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our generation’s finest and most brilliant actors. He was also a gifted comedic talent. It was a great privilege and pleasure to work with him and we are all absolutely devastated by this sudden loss. Our thoughts go out to his family at this very difficult time.”
Without Hoffman, the future of Showtime’s “Happyish” is now unclear.
Hoffman was found dead in his New York City apartment on the morning of February 2. Exact cause of death has not yet been released, though circumstances suggest that the “Capote” award-winner died of an apparent drug overdose. Hoffman was a father of three children with costume designer Mimi O’Donnell. He was 46.
