Kendrick Lamar Hints At A Release Date For His New Album

When Kendrick Lamar released his new song, “i,” on Tuesday, it felt like a promising sign that we’d see his sophomore album sooner rather than later. The song was the first solo single that he had released since his 2012 debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city, and it seemed to signal that his new project would drop before the end of the year — and it might.

“I’m hoping to push it out before 2015,” K. Dot told Carson Daly during an interview on 97.1 AMP Radio. “I’m gonna say that. I’m working hard in the studio.”

Not the most revealing tidbit, but, hey, it’s more detail than we’ve gotten so far. Unless you count that promise from TDE’s CEO that the label has plans to drop six albums in 2014. (With four already out and Kendrick apparently on the way, there’s actually a chance that might happen — as long as we get Jay Rock’s album before 2015, too).

As for “i,” the Compton native says that it sounds unlike anything else you’ll hear on rap radio these days for a reason.

“When I go into creating an album or any type of song, I usually cut off everything from the radio because you can easily be influenced from songs that you like, songs that you may not like,” he said. “So I said, ‘I’m gonna go in the studio and I’m going to do what I feel organically without being confined to industry standards or what people assume that I should do.’ Because, at the end of the day, man, I’m an artist and I would hate to be stagnant.”

Never that.
