New ‘Better Call Saul’ Clip Asks One Very Big, Very ‘Bad’ Question

Before there was Saul, there was Jimmy.

“Better Call Saul,” the “Breaking Bad” spinoff series focusing on Bob Odenkirk’s criminal lawyer, premieres early next year, but production is already well underway — as is the marketing campaign. Last night, during a “Breaking Bad Binge” marathon on AMC, a new clip for “Better Call Saul” premiered, complete with commentary from the show’s co-creators, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould.

In the video, Gilligan and Gould bring up the key question at the heart of the new series: Why in the world does a low-level attorney named Jimmy McGill need to reinvent himself as shady Saul Goodman?

“We’re about half a decade before the events of ‘Breaking Bad,’ before Walter White met Saul Goodman — but he didn’t start out this way. He’s Jimmy McGill,” Gilligan and Gould say of their leading lawyer. “How does Jimmy become Saul Goodman? And why? What kind of problem do you have that becoming Saul Goodman solves it?”

We’ll find out the answer when “Better Call Saul” arrives in February.
