‘Ride Along’ Tackles Zac Efron On Super Bowl Weekend

Zac Efron was hoping for a touchdown, but Ice Cube and Kevin Hart held onto their champion status over Super Bowl weekend.

“Ride Along” was #1 at the box office for a third consecutive weekend, fending off competition from “That Awkward Moment” and “Labor Day.” Industry forecasters had predicted a close race between “Ride Along” and “That Awkward Moment,” which stars Efron, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. But Cube and Hart had no problem cruising past the competition, taking in $12.3 million as “Awkward” debuted with $9 million.

Ice Cube had a supporting role in the $138.4 million-grossing “21 Jump Street,” but “Ride Along,” with its $92.9 million total, is now the biggest movie ever to feature the rapper as one of the leads.

“Ride Along” wasn’t the only obstacle for “That Awkward Moment.” Disney Animation’s gigantic blockbuster “Frozen” edged out Efron and crew with $9.3 million in its 11th week. Worldwide grosses for “Frozen” have passed $864.4 million, with $360 million of that gathered at the domestic box office.

Featuring Demi Lovato and Kristen Bell, the “Frozen” soundtrack has dominated the music charts for several weeks, as well. The songs are so popular that Disney released a “sing-a-long” version of the movie in theaters, which added another $2.2 million to the weekend’s grosses, according to industry estimates.

The audience for “That Awkward Moment” was 61 percent under 25 and 64 percent female, illustrating once again the studio’s “counter-programming” strategy during the Super Bowl. It was much more effective last year, when zombie-romantic-comedy “Warm Bodies” topped the box office with a $20 million debut.

“Labor Day,” which was a bit of Super Bowl-minded counter-programming targeted at older/more discerning audiences, debuted outside the top five with just $5.4 million. The audience for the film was 71 percent over the age of 25. Reviews have not been great for “Labor Day,” which stars Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin.

“The Nut Job” was #4 with $7.6 million, pushing the animated comedy’s total past $50 million. Mark Wahlberg’s “Lone Survivor” was #5 with $7.1 million dollars, which was enough to push the Navy SEAL drama’s total past $100 million. “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” continued to slip, coming in at #6 with $5.4 million. The rest of the Top 10 included Best Picture nominees “American Hustle” ($4.3 million) and “The Wolf of Wall Street” ($3.5 million), as well as last weekend’s $65 million-budgeted flop, “I, Frankenstein,” which made $3.5 million during its second weekend for a total of just $14.5 million.
