The New ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’ Poster Has Us Burning For November

It looks like the citizens of Panem took The Beatles’ words of advice to heart and took those broken wings and learned to fly. The first poster for “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” has flown into the internet-sphere, already building anticipation for the flick’s November 21 release date.

The new poster follows the pattern established by the first two installments in the young adult franchise, “The Hunger Games” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” Rather than debut a poster with star Jennifer Lawrence front and center or a preview of the bloody teen action to come in the movie (seriously, they’re all pretty violent), the one-sheet mirrors the cover of the Suzanne Collins books the movies are based on. A flaming mockingjay blazes against a plain black background, its wings lifted.

Of course, the mockingjay isn’t just an image on a movie poster or book cover, it’s an integral part of the plot. The series follows the travails of Katniss (Lawrence) as she’s sent off first to compete as a tribute in the Hunger Games, a last-(wo)man-standing battle between youths randomly selected from different areas. After she wins and competes in a second Hunger Games, she becomes a poster child for a revolution, an uprising of the districts against the government that rules and starves them. Throughout, the mockingjay pin Katniss wears serves as a sort of logo, and she is known to the public as their mockingjay.

Lawrence, alongside Josh Hutcherson and other cast members, returns for the third of four installments in the series. Expect more bloodshed and drama in “Mockingjay – Part 1,” this time with an extra dose of kidnapped Peeta.
