Despite the growing trend, Burger’s announcement caught many off guard, including “Divergent” star Shailene Woodley, whom MTV News spoke with at the Sundance Film Festival, where she was promoting her new film “White Bird in a Blizzard,” this past weekend. “It was pretty shocking,” Woodley said.

With production scheduled to start on “Insurgent” soon, a director announcement should be coming soon. For her part, Woodley — perhaps not so seriously — suggested that she direct the sequel. “Well, I propose that I direct. I would love it,” she said. “I think I’d be great at a huge action film. They’re definitely trying to get another director, but I haven’t heard. I’ve sort of been off the face of the planet for the holidays, so I don’t really know where they stand.” Whoever takes the reins from Burger has some work ahead of him or her, since it was the “Divergent” director’s vision that dictated the feel of the series so far. “Honestly, Neil created this entire world. This whole world was based off his intuition, his own creativity,” Woodley said. “It will be interesting to see someone else come in and shepherd the next film in a new way.”
