‘X-Men’ Assemble: Six Mutants We Want Facing ‘Apocalypse’

Warning: Spoilers for “X-Men: Days Of Future Past” are ahead.

Well, that’s one way to push the reset button.

By the end of “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” director Bryan Singer’s mash-up of two different eras of mutant mayhem, the table has been reset for Fox’s “X-Men” franchise. All that came before in the first three “X-Men” movies has, arguably, become undone. The way is clear for the “First Class” cast to move forward, continuity-free — something that fans have wanted to see for years.

So, what’s next? In two years, we’ll have “X-Men: Apocalypse,” featuring the nearly immortal villain that was seen building pyramids with his mind at the end of “Days of Future Past.” That’s one character you can count on seeing in the next “X-Men” movie. You can also bank on returns for James McAvoy as Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Nicholas Hoult as Beast and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, the keepers of the “First Class” flame. And Quicksilver? All but guaranteed, based on the popularity of his big scene.

Who else needs to be involved? Here are a few of the mutants we want to see in “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

Cyclops
One of the greatest achievements of “Days of Future Past” is the resurrection of Scott Summers. When James Marsden appeared on screen, it yielded more applause than any other moment from the film. Now that Cyclops is back, and on Xavier’s radar (thanks to Logan), it’s time for the Fox films to treat the character with the love and respect he’s owed. It’s time to put Cyclops in the drivers seat, and on a collision course with En Sabah Nur.

Jean Grey
You can’t have Scott without Jean. Well, you can, but it’s not as fun. Now’s as good a time as any to reintroduce the eventual Dark Phoenix back into the mix, but before any of that evil baggage begins. Following “Days of Future Past,” it’s time for Xavier to mold his first proper X-Men team. Jean is an integral part of that lineup.

Storm
She’s the other hero that Wolverine name dropped in conversation with young Charles, so if Xavier’s looking for Scott and Jean, expect him to look for Storm as well. She’s one of the best and most iconic X-Men of them all, and it’s time she received the proper treatment she deserves. If the powers that be have their fingers on the pulse of a certain slice of fandom, then perhaps Lupita Nyong’o will be getting a call shortly.

Gambit
Channing Tatum as Gambit. That’s a thing that’s in the works. Whether we want him or not, Gambit looks set for an “Apocalypse” appearance. And why wouldn’t we want to see Chan man put his stamp on the card-dealing mutant?

Angel
Ben Foster already took a stab at Warren Worthington in “X-Men: The Last Stand,” but we can all agree that it didn’t work out so well — not Foster’s fault, mind you, but it was the wrong take on the character. With the Apocalypse story coming into play, now’s an opportunity to hit reset on Angel, and give fans the Archangel storyline we deserve.

Cable
Isn’t it about time we saw this guy on film? Besides, there are rumors of an “X-Force” movie in the works at Fox. If at least Cable shows up, and ideally others (Cannonball and Domino, looking at you), then we have the beginnings of an “X-Force” spinoff, all thanks to big old Apocalypse.

Which mutants do you want to see battling Apocalypse in the next “X-Men” movie?
