Grant Morrison Wants To Do A ‘Godzilla’ Movie

by 27 mins ago

Writer Grant Morrison has destroyed – and built – new universes in the pages of comic books for years. But never before has he created two of them at the same time, in the same comic – and luckily, this one has an appropriate title: “Annihilator.”

The first issue of the eagerly anticipated book hits stores this week, so MTV News hopped on the phone with the writer to talk about his influences for the book, his flirtation with Hollywood, and how he’s dying to do a “Godzilla” movie:

MTV News: I remember chatting with you about this about two San Diego Comic-Cons ago, so this has been in the works for a while.

Grant Morrison: I came up with it a few years ago, and then we got Frazier [Irving] on board, and he’s been working on it since. We waited until we had enough material to feel comfortable to start releasing it. That’s why it’s taken two years, probably. But it’s the most recent thing I’ve made, so I’m pretty excited.

MTV: Given that it’s a Hollywood satire, and things change in entertainment so rapidly, were you at all worried that the business would be totally different by the time this book was released?

Morrison: There are certain things that will always been in play. There will always be big franchises, and in the next few years they’ll be darker and darker, and more Batman than Batman. So we’re obviously talking about that, but at the same time that opened up ...

A History Of Guns On The Batmobile

by 9 mins ago

“No guns, no killing!”

That’s what Batman (Christian Bale) yells at Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) in “The Dark Knight Rises,” and it’s something that’s become a cardinal rule of the character for decades now.

Constant fans will often point out that the original comic book iteration of the character regularly carried a firearm, like most olde timey Mystery Men of his day. But as the character grew and changed, writers began to accept that the boy who watched his parents gunned down in front of him would grow up to be a man firmly against killing, and by guns in particular.

But when it comes to the Batmobile? Well, that’s an entirely different story, and one that’s continued to the reveal of the vehicle from “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” earlier today (September 11).

“Batman” and “Batman Returns”

Batmobile

Okay, remember that no gun rule? Throw it out the bat-window. Not only does Tim Burton’s Batmobile have guns, it’s got hardcore weapons that fire something far more lethal than rubber bullets: two M1919 Browning machine guns that pop out from flaps in the fender.

“Batman Forever”

Batmobile

Taking a break from high impact weaponry, “Batman Forever” mostly played around with grappling hooks and jumps, rather than guns.

“Batman & Robin”

Batmobile

Like the rest of the movie, Joel Schumacher’s sequel to “Batman Forever” delved into excess when it came to weapons, from rocket launchers to bombs. No guns, so we sort of get around the rule – but no ...

Pumpkin Spice Oreos: We’ve Tasted The Newest Cookie Treat

by 32 mins ago

The good news is that unlike Pumpkin Spice condoms, Pumpkin Spice Oreos are real. The better news? MTV News got a chance to try them in advance of their September 24 release, and they are delicious.

Look, we’ve tried a fair amount of weird foods here at the MTV offices: Buffalo Crunch Donuts; Ninja Turtles Pizza; and X-Men Twinkies, among other items. And with each of them, reaction has been mixed. Some of the writers here love weird foods (read: me), and some get totally grossed out at the drop of a hat.

With the Pumpkin Spice Oreos, finally, MTV News was united as one, agreeing that the cookies are so good we can’t wait until the end of the month to snag some more. Just take a look at this impromptu cookie party!

Pictured: Everybody being very serious about eating cookies.

Myself, I’ve been an amateur connoisseur of Oreos for a while, even traveling far out of my way to track down an elusive Root Beer Float Oreo (delicious), or the new Caramel Apple (pretty good). But when word of the Pumpkin Spice Oreo spread like wildfire, I knew I had to get my hands on some.

IMG_7407

It’s a combination that could have gone terribly wrong. There are some flavors that just don’t work with an Oreo cookie, and Pumpkin Spice is certainly way too prevalent this time of year… It’s not even officially Fall, and I’m already kind of sick of pumpkins.

But ...

Rocket And Groot As Calvin And Hobbes Is Too Much For Our Little Hearts

by 16 mins ago

What happens when you take Rocket Raccoon and Groot from “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and mash them up with the main characters (and art style) of “Calvin & Hobbes?” Our hearts explode, that’s what.

Created by artist Mike S. Miller (via GeekTyrant) – and available for purchase as prints on his Facebook page – we know the phrase “I can’t even” gets thrown around a lot, but “I” and also “can’t even.”

Pumpkin Spice Condoms, And 6 Other Flavors That Aren’t Happening

by 38 mins ago

Art by Gavin Alaoen

On September 7, word started to fly around the Internet that Durex, the makers of finer safe sex products everywhere, were going to be releasing the most seasonally appropriate prophylactic ever made. Specifically, a pumpkin spice flavored condom:

Pumpkin Spice Condoms

Unfortunately for aficionados who would like to follow up their latte with a lotta something else, the picture is a hoax, as MTV News found out when we reached out to Durex.

“Durex has heard that people are saying we launched a ‘Pumpkin Spice’ condom,” Durex said in an official statement. “We can’t claim this one, but we do love it when people spice it up in the bedroom.”

Zing!

And though the pumpkin spice condoms aren’t real – and maybe shouldn’t be – the level of interest around them suggests that the safe sex industry might want to look outside the, er, box for other flavors. If so, we’ve got a few suggestions.

‘Doctor Who’: 9 Burning Questions For ‘Robot Of Sherwood’

by 2 hours ago

Not to editorialize too much, but “Robot of Sherwood,” the third episode of the eighth series of “Doctor Who,” may be one of the funniest and best-structured episodes of all time. It’ll take a few more viewings to determine whether it reaches the lofty heights of a “Blink,” but writer Mark Gatiss crafted a great, standalone hour that also raises plenty of questions about the future of the series.

Here’s everything we’re still dying to know after watching The Doctor’s adventure with Robin Hood:

1. What Is The Promised Land?

Doctor Who Series 8Adrian Rogers, © BBC/BBC Worldwide 2014

…And why do all these robots want to get there? In the past three episodes, we’ve seen Missy (Michelle Gomez) rescue both a cyborg and a space soldier from the moment of their deaths, stealing them to a place she calls paradise. This week, the robots crashed on Earth (shades of the season opener, btw) want to make it to the Promised Land, too.

So what exactly is it? And why do all these robots want to get there? And furthermore, who is sending them on the mission to find the Promised Land? This is one mystery we expect we may not find out until the end of the season.

2. Is Robin Hood Coming Back?

Tom Riley’s Robin Hood definitely had his story neatly finished, but the character was so good, we can’t help but ...

Here’s How ‘Doctor Who’ Pulled Off That Insane Spoon Fight

by 11 mins ago

You wouldn’t think fighting with a spoon would be that difficult, but if you watched the latest episode of “Doctor Who,” you know that couldn’t be farther from the truth. In the most recent episode (Sept. 6), “Robot of Sherwood,” The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) confronts Robin Hood (Tom Riley) with nothing but a kitchen utensil – and wins.

MTV News talked to writer Mark Gatiss, and Riley over the phone about developing and filming the scene. And as it turns out, not only was the spoon the product of budgetary constraints, but it led to seasoned swordsman Riley being engaged in what he calls, “the hardest fight I’ve ever had to do.”

MTV News: The spoon fight is an all time classic. Mark, how much of that was in the script?

Mark Gatiss: In an earlier draft the Doctor did have a proper sword fight with Robin. There was definitely something budgetary, that we couldn’t afford to choreograph someone fighting, or have any horse. I remember a conversation where someone said, that’s not really the Doctor.

I deliberately wrote a scene where he’s having a yogurt at the beginning, so I did conveniently have a spoon in his coat. But I just thought, that’s the Doctor. He uses his wit, and he uses his mind, and his defensive weapon is a screwdriver. So it’s only right that his weapon of choice is a spoon.

Now for practicality, it ended up being a very large spoon, and he had to wear a gauntlet, for ...

‘Doctor Who’: How The ‘Robot Of Sherwood’ Got His Hilarious Laugh

by 14 mins ago

This week on “Doctor Who,” The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) teams up with Robin Hood (Tom Riley) for what might be the funniest episode of “Who” ever – or at least in a good long while. In advance of the episodes airing on BBC America on September 6, MTV News talked to Riley, as well as writer Mark Gatiss about developing the idea, getting cast, and how they created Robin’s hilarious, infectious laugh.

We’ll have more spoiler-filled talk with the duo after the episode airs, so tune back in then. Oh, and very mild spoilers for the episode, though nothing you couldn’t figure out from the promos.

MTV News: What was the general idea when you were starting? How did you come to the idea of the Doctor and Robin Hood teaming up?

Mark Gatiss: It was Steven [Moffat]‘s suggestion. It’s different every year. Last year, I always wanted to bring back the Ice Warriors, and I always wanted to do a submarine story, so I combined the two. This year, Steven said, “What about Robin Hood, I’ve always wanted to do Robin Hood.” I always loved the Errol Flynn film in particular, so I thought it could be great fun. The whole of idea of presenting it as too good to be true, as a ’30s matinee idol version of a character who wasn’t real anyway, was irresistible.

That, in combination with a Doctor that I knew was going to be less human, and a bit edgier… I can imagine that ...

The Movie Song Of The Summer Is…

by 2 mins ago

Last week (August 30), we asked you what the Movie Song Of The Summer was, and now, thousands of votes later, we have an answer: 1972′s “Go All The Way,” by The Raspberries.

The song first plays in the mega-hit “Guardians of the Galaxy” when Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is escaping from the planet Morag with the dangerous, possibly universe destroying Orb. Confronted by the villainous Korath (Djimon Honsou), Quill springs into action, blasting his way to the safety of his trusty ship The Milano, and remembering to click a track on “Awesome Mix, Vol. 1″ before he does.

“Go All The Way” wasn’t actually on our original list of Movie Songs Of The Summer, but was the clear winner by overwhelming write-in vote. That said, on the off chance one intrepid voter stuffed the ballots, the second place holder was pretty close.

Also from “Guardians of The Galaxy,” your number two choice was “Come and Get Your Love,” by Redbone. It’s actually the song that directly precedes “Go All The Way,” begging the question whether people only watched the first ten minutes of the movie, but we digress.

“Come And Get Your Love” is also part of Quill’s “Awesome Mix,” played when he arrives on Morag. Clicking on his trusty Walkman, Quill sings and dances through the ruins of Morag, even pulling a native bottom-feeder off a rock to use as a defacto microphone.

So there you go! The Movie Songs of the Summer are from 1972 and 1974 respectively, so ...

Scarlett Johansson Has Given Birth To A Baby Girl

by 12 mins ago

Congrats are in order for “Avengers” star Scarlett Johansson, who has given birth to a baby girl named Rose! This is the first child for the actress and her fiance, Romain Dauriac.

According to a statement from the actress’ rep sent to the AP, the mother and child are doing well, and “the couple is seeking privacy and are supporters of the No Kids Policy, the celebrity effort to keep famous folks’ children out of the public eye.”

Johansson has had a blockbuster year with appearances in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Lucy,” and “Chef.” Next year she’ll appear in the “Avengers” sequel “Age of Ultron,” which had its filming schedule switch around to accommodate her pregnancy.

There was no statement at this time on whether they named the baby Rose because that’s another shade of red, like Scarlett. Just saying.
