‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Can Lead To Abusive Relationships, Study Shows

by 26 mins ago

If you’ve read the erotic romance novel “Fifty Shades of Grey,” chances are you’ve developed an utter fascination for the slick Christian Grey — along with a new-found appreciation for jets, ties and elevators. But those aren’t the only ways the novel might affect you.

A new study shows that young adult women who read the BDSM-filled series are more likely than non-readers to show signs of eating disorders, binge drinking, having abusive sex partners and other unhealthy behaviors. The study, led by Michigan State University researcher Amy Bonomi, said all of these behaviors are risks associated with being in an abusive relationship, much like the novel’s protagonist, Anastasia Steele.

The study looked at more than 650 women between the ages of 18 and 24, which Bonomi says is a ripe time for testing sexual intimacy. Researchers found that those who read “Fifty Shades” were 25% more likely than nonreaders to have a verbally abusive partner and 34% were more likely to have a partner with “stalking tendencies,” like Christian Grey. Furthermore, 75% of readers were more likely to have fasted or used diet aids for longer than 24 hours. Those who read all three books in the series were 63% more likely to have more than five sex partners and 65% more likely to binge drink.

Bonomi says one caveat to the study is that some women may have showed signs of those dangerous behaviors before ...

Jessica Alba Would ‘Absolutely’ Return For ‘Sin City 3′

by 26 mins ago

by Charles Webb

“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” is the fifth collaboration between actress Jessica Alba and Robert Rodriguez (who co-directed the film with “Sin City” creator Frank Miller). Between the green screen-heavy worlds and crazy action, MTV News wanted to know what kept Alba coming back for more – and during a recent L.A. junket for the film, we asked just that.

“How can you not, he’s so inspiring!” Alba said.

Ten years after the first “Sin City,” Rodriguez asked Alba to once again don the chaps of dancer Nancy – now a troubled alcoholic following the suicide of her savior/lover John Hartigan (Bruce Willis) in the first film. And that meant more timeon virtual sets, more time playing to the noir-infused dialog straight from Miller’s comic scripts – something even co-star Josh Brolin says he struggled with during his time on the film.

But for Alba, she saw working with Rodriguez and within the unique world of “Sin City” as an opportunity.

“He really creates a world and a universe that’s like nothing else,” Alba said of working with the director. “And as an actor, he doesn’t see any limitations on your capabilities or what you can do. He’s constantly challenging the status quo and pushing the limits, so it’s great to be part of it.”

Does that mean Alba would be up for a third go-round as Nancy (presuming she survives “A Dame to Kill For”)?

“Absolutely,” Alba said. “Hopefully, it won’t be in ten years. Hopefully, ...

Don’t Stand In The Middle Of Fireworks Unless You Have This Suit

by 27 mins ago

We all love fireworks and it’s a universal truth that the Fourth of July is just the best, so riddle me this: how is it that we’ve gotten to 2014 and we still can’t just stand right in the middle of a fireworks display?

The answer is this: HAHAHAHA WE CAN. We so can.

Or at least inventor Colin Furze can. Dude made himself a steel suit that A) looks very silly but, B) allows him to stand, unharmed, smack dab in the center of a bunch of rockets and nonsense going off.

I can’t stress this enough: please don’t try this at home. But I’m also so, so glad that Furze did.

And, hey, if I had a goofy steel fireworks suit, I would totally make a video of myself standing in it set to rock music too. But I don’t have one, and neither do you, so you’ll just have to settle for watching Furze’s video.

Tom Hardy Photobombed A Wedding Party As Bane

by 16 mins ago

Imagine that you’re getting married in Pittsburgh in the summer of 2011, and then all of a sudden the masked leader of the League of Shadows drops in.

That’s exactly what happened in this picture that popped up on reddit recently. A wedding party was walking past the Pittsburgh set of “The Dark Knight Rises” when Tom Hardy, dressed in full Bane regalia, waved to them.

It’s the kind of magical moment that will last in the memories of everyone involved. I’m not sure if that had more to do with the wedding or seeing Bane, though.

‘True Detective’: HBO Reveals When Season Two Will Premiere

by 17 mins ago

If early reports are to be believed, fans of “True Detective” have an idea of who we’ll see when the HBO anthology series reutrns — most likely Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Elizabeth Moss and Vince Vaughn — but we weren’t sure when that would happen.

Well, according to HBO programming director Michael Lombardo, we can expect to return to Nic Pizzalatto’s dark world next summer (via The Hollywood Reporter). But Lombardo also mentioned that things might not be quite as dark the next time around.

“It’s still dark,” Lombardo said (via Variety). “Nic explores the darkness in people’s souls… It’s not as dark, but it’s not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.”

In addition to a slightly lighter tone, the second season will also be different from the story of Rust Cohle and Marty Hart in its number of directors. Cary Fukunaga directed the crap out of all eight episodes in the first season, but Lombardo confirmed that “three or four different directors” will tackle the next set of episodes.

None of this is shocking information, but it’s the most we’ve heard officially in a long time. Lombardo wouldn’t confirm the rumored cast, but said that we’d hear soon.

Watch Nick Offerman Sexually Terrorize A Bunch Of Cowboys In ‘The Gunfighter’

by 24 mins ago

No one knows how to orchestrate “a true ballet of death” quite like Nick Offerman.

The “Parks and Recreation” star lends his indistinguishable voice to director Eric Kissack’s “The Gunfighter,” an eight-minute comedy competing in TheWrap’s 2014 ShortList Film Festival, all about how one little voice can cause a whole lot of trouble. Set in the Wild West, the short begins as the titular gunfighter enters a saloon for a shot of whiskey. But as he approaches the bar, the words of an unseen narrator fill the air, spilling dark secrets about sexual misconduct and controversial desires for all the room to hear.

‘The Vampire Diaries’: Damon Tells Elena To Move On In Emotional Season 6 Promo

by 4 mins ago

Season five of “The Vampire Diaries” ended with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) being sucked into posthumous nothingness while a shocked Elena (Nina Dobrev) lost both her boyfriend and her entire town, so we’re feeling like it’s a litttttle bit unfair for Damon’s ghost to be asking her to move on so quickly. Still, we get why Stefan (Paul Wesley) is a little concerned, given the fact that Elena seems to be sniffing Damon’s old clothes in this brand new season six promo.

“Damon’s gone,” a worried Stefan tells her. “You need to say goodbye, too.”

From the looks of things, that might not happen anytime soon — instead, it would appear that Elena flies off the rails a bit and starts biting people. We can’t wait!

“The Vampire Diaries” returns to The CW on October 2.

George R.R. Martin Teases Major Deaths In Next ‘Game Of Thrones’ Book

by 18 mins ago

The Stranger comes for us all eventually, and soon, it’ll come for some of your favorite characters in the world of Westeros.

George R.R. Martin, author of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels that inspire “Game of Thrones,” recently spoke about how the upcoming sixth book in the series, “The Winds of Winter,” will have no trouble lopping off the heads of some of the more prominent figures in the ongoing feud between the men and women north, south and east of the Wall.

“The way my books are structured, everyone was together, then they all went their separate ways and the story deltas out like that,” he said, “and now it’s getting to the point where the story is beginning to delta back in, and the viewpoint characters are occasionally meeting up with each other now and being in the same point at the same time, which gives me a lot more flexibility for killing people.”

Well, that’s alarming. Not unexpected, but alarming. Which viewpoint characters are in close enough proximity to other viewpoint characters to be considered endangered? Here are a few possibilities, based on where everyone is at the end of “A Dance with Dragons.”

BUT FIRST, A WARNING!

All events through the end of “A Dance with Dragons,” and preview chapters from “The Winds of Winter,” are fair game from this point forward. If you only watch “Game of Thrones” the show, and haven’t read the books, there are big-time spoilers ahead. Proceed carefully!

Need To Know: Miley Banned From Performing In Dominican Republic For Being Miley

by 8 mins ago

With additional reporting by Janelle Myers

No Show For Miley
Miley Cyrus has been banned from taking the stage in the Dominican Republic, because she “undertakes acts that go against morals and customs, which are punishable by Dominican law,”a government agency said. Those acts would be twerking and crotch-grabbing. Her VMA performance from last year definitely would not fly there.

Thanks Iggy And Rita For This VMA Tease
Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora are getting me pumped for the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday with these behind-the-scenes rehearsal photos. I’m counting down the days until they perform “Black Widow.” Oh, look, Jessie J shared a picture from her rehearsal with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj too.

What Am I Supposed To Do Until The VMAs?
While you wait until Sunday night, take a look at Britney and Justin attending the MTV Video Music Awards together years ago, the most memorable VMA outfits, and the best boy band moments.

It’s About Time
Bill Murray is definitely getting what he deserves: his own holiday. The Toronto International Film Festival declared September 5 Bill Murray Day and will also host the world premiere of his latest film “St. Vincent.”

Congrats To These Two Dads
ICYMI, Pete Wentz and Carson Daly welcomed new bundles of joy separately on Wednesday. Wentz is now the proud father of his second son, Saint Lazslo. The former “TRL” VJ is now cradling his third child and second daughter, London Rose.

If You Watch One More Ice Bucket Challenge Video, It Should Be This One

by 10 mins ago

Our social feeds over the past week or so have been a veritable carnival of celebrities taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge — pop stars, former presidents and actors gleefully dumping freezing water over their heads in the name of fighting Lou Gehrig’s disease.

By now, you might be a bit sick of all the fanfare, but if you watch one more ice bucket video this week, you should probably watch Anthony Carbajal’s.

26-year-old Carbajal’s contribution to the trend begins with disarming silliness — the man cavorts around in a bikini, writhes on a car, and sports a pair of pink booty shorts bearing the words, “Kiss My ALS.”

That’s right, MY ALS.

The bizarre hilarity of the first section of the video belies what’s to come, which is a heartbreaking speech by the young man about the horrors of the disease, which killed his grandmother, afflicted his mother and, recently, took hold in Carbajal himself.

Carbajal is already suffering from the effects of ALS — having trouble starting his car and buttoning his shirt. “Eventually I won’t be able to use my arms or hands at all. Eventually I won’t be able to walk, talk and breathe on my own,” he says in the video. “That’s the real truth of what ALS is. It’s devastating. It’s costly … I apologize for my rant and my tears, but if I don’t — if I simply dump ice on my head I don’t think you’re really going to get the ...
