DJ Mustard Is The VMAs House DJ, So He Should Just Play His Own Records, Right?

by 5 mins ago

If DJ Mustard wanted, he could rock the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards playing a set with just records that he produced — he is the show’s house DJ after all, and who’s going to tell him no?

Mustard already rules radio with songs like Trey Songz’s “Na Na,” T.I. and Iggy Azalea’s “No Mediocre,” Ty Dolla $ign’s “Paranoid,” Kid Ink and Chris Brown’s “Show Me,” Tinashe’s “2 On” and YG and Drake’s “Who Do You Love,” just to name a few. So him doing an all-Mustard set isn’t such a bad idea right?

“Nah, I’m not gonna be like that; I’m gonna play everybody’s music, I’m not just gonna play mine,” Mustard told MTV News, before playfully recanting the whole idea with a hearty laugh. “I might just play mine.”

All jokes aside, Mustard is taking his role as 2014 VMA house DJ very seriously, seeing as he has to keep the crowd moving in between performances and awards.

“It’s cool, it’s a blessing, I couldn’t believe it when they told me. So just being a part of that is crazy. I’m ready,” he said. “Everybody likes good music, so when you’re just playing good music and encouraging everybody to have fun, they’ll have fun.”

It's up to you to decide the winners of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards! Vote now and tune in Sunday, August 24, at 9/8c ET to see who wins at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Plus, get the latest updates ...

Your Favorite ‘Game Of Thrones’ And ‘OITNB’ Stars Are Doing A Play Together

by 25 mins ago

Have you ever watched Taylor Schilling play Piper Chapman on “Orange is the New Black” and been like, “man, I bet she’d be a really great scene partner for ‘Game of Thrones’ star Peter Dinklage”? No? Just us?

Well, regardless, fans of HBO’s genre sensation and Netflix’s prison sensation will be pleased to learn that Schilling will indeed star alongside Dinklage, in a play in New York City’s East Village. Dinklage will play the Rakitin to Schilling’s Natalya in Ivan Turgenev’s “A Month in the Country,” which will run from Jan. 9 to Feb. 15, 2015, at the Classic Stage Company. (You can sign up for their newsletter for ticket sale alerts.)

Dinklage’s character is in love with Schilling’s character and, well, you can ask Alex and Crazy Eyes how well that worked out for them.

Also, in related news, Poussey is set to do “Waiting For Godot” with King Joffrey.*

Lindsay Lohan And Tina Fey’s ‘Mean Girls’ Selfie Is SO Fetch

by 25 mins ago

What’s that? A “Mean Girls” reunion you say? Looks like it — at least for Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey.

Lohan shared a selfie on Instagram with her co-star, writing “Lovely running into an inspiring, funny, beautiful old friend!!!!”

Earlier this month another “Mean Girls” mini-reunion took place between Amy Poehler, Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Franzese when the trio met up Franzese’s birthday.

Before that, in February, Lohan also snapped a reunion selfie with Franzese, along with “badass MC” Rajiv Surendra.

Instagram’s Most Popular Models Cover ‘Vogue’

by 31 mins ago

Vogue‘s September cover is here and it’s big–really, really big. The cover and its corresponding pull-out boast nine of today’s most popular models, including Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, and Cara Delevingne.

Vogue CoverVogue

The cover, which was shot by Mario Testino, dubs this exclusive crew as “The Instagirls,” a group of women who are not only “savvy on social media,” but using the social network to build and expand their brands, while simultaneously, “single-handedly catapulting themselves to this generation’s version of supermodel status.” Exhibit A: That time Cara Delevingne made history live-Instagramming her Giles Deacon runway walk. Wow, I only use Instagram to share photos of, like, landscapes, so that must be why I’m not an Instagirl (yet).

Vogue September IssueVogue

Unsurprisingly, these ladies are not only popular on Instagram and favored by Anna Wintour, but also incredibly successful at, y’know, their jobs–Joan, Cara, and Karlie were just named to Forbes‘ list of highest paid models for 2014. One of the the most important things when signing a new face to a company these days? Number of Instagram followers, y’all. Fewer brunch pics, more head shots, K?

Surprising, though, are the models with major Insta-followings who appear to have been left off the cover—like Jourdan Dunn (with 700,000+ Instagram followers), Chanel Iman (with 600,000+), or Barbara Palvin (with over a million, though, her connection to Justin Bieber and One Direction might have a little something to do with that). But! We ...

Kanye West Told Statik Selektah ‘Jazz Was Dead,’ So He Went And Made A Jazz Album

by 14 mins ago

What do you do when Kanye West tells you that the entire premise behind your next passion project is dead as a doornail? If you’re veteran hip-hop producer Statik Selektah, you completely ignore him.

The Boston-bred DJ and producer released his sixth studio album, What Goes Around, on Tuesday (August 19), and based the entire LP’s musical backbone on old jazz samples. For Statik, it’s a hat tip to the hip-hop producers that he grew up idolizing, like DJ Premier and Pete Rock.

In March 2010, Statik was invited to one of Kanye West’s infamous My Beautiful Dark Fantasy recording sessions in Hawaii, and at the suggestion of Nas, played one particular jazz-infused beat for Yeezy.

“The first beat I played him was the Nas one; Kanye sat there and listened for like 10 seconds and he pressed stop and he was like: ‘It’s cool, but jazz is dead,’” Statik recalled during an interview with MTV News. “I was just happy to be there, but the way he said that to me always stuck in mind. This album was definitely inspired by that.”

What Goes Around doesn’t just blend jazz with hip-hop. On it, Stat also brings worlds together, placing together a gang of MCs that you normally wouldn’t see on one track list. Snoop Dogg teams with Wais P and Ransom on “All the Way (Pimp Hop)” and Bun B and De La Soul’s Posdnous link on “God Knows.”

“I tried to take if A Tribe Called Quest and N.W.A. came ...

This Groot Cosplay Gives New Meaning To ‘I Am Groot’

by 1 min ago

Some cosplayers just have a gift for becoming their favorite characters. They can take a handful of simple materials and make ultra-believable replicas of the creatures, warriors and cartoon characters.

Calen Hoffman is one of those cosplayers, and his most recent creation may be his most impressive yet.

If you head over to his Facebook, you can see highly detailed costumes for characters from “Bioshock” and “Gears of War,” but his take on Groot (via Screen Crush) is something to behold.

Check out a few of the photos below, and head over to Hoffman’s Facebook for the rest.

Here’s How Eternal Rap God Eminem Scored 7 VMA Nominations

by 6 mins ago

The 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, set to go down this Sunday, August 24 at The Forum in Inglewood, are about to remind us just about everything we love about Eminem.

And not only because he scored the second most nominations of the year, with an impressive total of seven. Or because it marks the fifteenth anniversary since his first VMA win, when he took home the 1999 VMA for Best New Artist and owned the stage with performances of “My Name Is” and “Guilty Conscience.” Or that he’s got 12 total VMAs to the name Marshall Mathers.

What’s especially incredible about Em’s nods this year is that they’re for three different videos — the most ever for him, since he usually has one or two that dominate — and that those three videos show his broad range as an artist.

And while “The Monster,” “Rap God” and “Berzerk” are distinct in many ways — sonically, visually and stylistically — they share one common thread, and it’s a trait that has made Marshall one of the most revered MCs of all time, and one that he particularly stressed on November’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2: astounding lyricism.

As much as we love tracks like “Not Afraid,” “Love the Way You Lie” and “We Made You” — the last three videos he scored nominations for, dating back to 2009 — there’s something about this year’s crop that just feels special.

“BERZERK”

First, there was “Berzerk,” released in late ...

‘Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’ Finale: Benzino Is ATL’s New ‘Gossip Girl’ And The Return Of Stevie J And Mimi

by 12 mins ago

All’s well that ends well.

Or not.

The season finale of “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” was supposed to be all about tying a nice little bow on all of the castmembers’ fights, drama, rumors and love triangles, but from the looks of it, it may have just been one hell of an alley-oop for the reunion show.

Benzino landed somewhere between petty private investigator and Gossip Girl with his not-so-covert probe into Joseline Hernandez’s alleged promiscuity.

“I posted about all these men that I’m positive that Joseline slept with,” Zino said of his back and forth with Joseline on Instagram.

During Rasheeda’s pop and launch for Pois, Zino did recon on the Puerto Rican Princess under the guise of trying to warn his best friend Stevie J that his wife was stepping out on their marriage behind his back, but it just came off as messier than a soup sandwich. Grown men were huddled up like schoolgirls gossiping about a woman.

According to Stevie and Joseline’s former producer/friend Fly Dantoni, not only did she sleep with her former driver Rich, she did so for three months.

Karlie Redd, of course, overheard her ex ‘Zino’s plot and couldn’t wait to send Joseline a “code red” text to spill the beans.

Stevie J tried to tell Joseline the truth about his tryst with Althea, but she was too busy busting his balls over the rumors Benzino was floating around about her.

“It doesn’t matter where the info comes from, what matters is it true or not,” Stevie said ...

This 6-Year-Old Is The Best, Most Adorable Theater Critic Ever

by 12 mins ago

World, meet Iain Armitage. Iain Armitage, meet world.

Many of you might envision New York theater critics as a bunch of highfalutin fuddy-duddys like these guys, but this six-year-old theater maniac is here to prove that the Great White Way has a little something for everyone. (Except for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” of course, which is not appropriate for those in Iain’s age range.)

Armitage — who is the son of actor Euan Morton, who famously played Boy George on Broadway, and producer Lee Armitage — has been filming glorious, too precocious for words reviews of the shows he regularly takes in with his family, and his mother has been capturing the footage on her YouTube account. (H/T to Nick Walsh for the heads up.)

We think his opinions are pretty spot-on — and also out-of-this-world adorable — so feel free to watch some of our favorite reviews if you’re thinking about heading up to NYC for a show anytime soon, or if you just really like things that are cute. (Be sure to check out his rant about not being allowed to see “Hedwig” since it’s essentially the cutest thing we’ve seen all week.)

On “Les Miserables”

“It was a feelings show. They put a lot of feelings.”

On “Sundays in the Park With George”

“It’s kind of about two different shows put together in one. One part is about the George who does paintalism, I mean pointillism. The second part is about George in more modern times. ...
