How Was Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ Director Influenced By ‘The Shining’?

by 5 mins ago

When Taylor Swift announced she had three surprises as part of her epic livestream, there was one little detail that may have gotten lost in the shuffle: her video for “Shake It Off” was directed by none other than Mark Romanek.

Wait, who? For those versed in movie ephemera, and music video history, Romanek’s involvement in “Shake It Off” is nearly as exciting as the announcement of her new album, “1989.” But for those not in the know, here’s a little primer on why Romanek matters – and how he made “Shake It Off” look so darn good.

“Static” (1985)

Though Romanek would later be best known for his work on music videos, he actually started with a love of film created by multiple viewings of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey…” Which makes sense, given his focus on sparse, stark settings (like the soundstage in “Shake It Off”) and emphasis on shocks of color.

Though he got some street cred working with fabled thriller director Brian de Palma, Romanek’s first feature was weirdo sci-fi film “Static” in 1985, starring Amanda Plummer. This led directly to his first music video gig for British New Wave group The The, who featured on the soundtrack for the film.

“One Hour Photo” (2002)

After almost two decades of creating iconic music videos for Nine Inch Nails (“Closer”), Janet and Michael Jackson (“Scream,” which once again showed off his “2001″ influence), Jay-Z (“99 Problems”) and way more, Romanek once again returned to his first love, film.

Carrie Moves On In New ‘Homeland’ Season 4 Trailer

by 8 mins ago

["Homeland" Season 3 spoilers ahead!]

“Homeland” is officially almost back, and with it a blank slate after the show killed off one of its two leads, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), at the end of last year.

It’s a widely accepted feeling that Brody’s presence on the show became unrealistic after everyone learned of his treachery — and his family’s problems became burdensome as the plot line continued to drag — so we’re thrilled-slash-cautiously optimistic at the prospect of Carrie Matheson (Claire Danes) starting anew.

“It hasn’t been a 14-year war we’ve been waging, but a one-year war, waged 14 times,” a tired Saul (Mandy Patinkin) voice-overs as Carrie takes on a new field position in the Middle East (the fourth season is set in Islamabad and Kabul).

In addition to the dangerous new setting, the trailer also reveals a first look at Carrie and Brody’s baby, a peek at Corey Stoll as the CIA station chief in Pakistan, and footage of Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) having what appears to be some sort of alcohol-fueled meltdown.

“Homeland” returns with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, October 5.

Are Arnold Shwarzenegger And Jet Li Dating In ‘The Expendables 3′?

by 19 mins ago

Warning: “Expendables 3” Spoilers Ahead!

Sylvester Stallone’s “Expendables” series is all about sending up action heroes of yesterday, often tasking stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger with revisiting their classic lines, like “Get to the choppa,” twice in one act. (Seriously, watch “Expendables 3.” It’s a thing that happens.)

But sometimes, the “Expendables” films subvert the expectations that fans bring to the table. Case in point, once again by way of Schwarzenegger: After regularly getting the girl in his films, the macho ex-Governator gets the guy in “Expendables 3.”

During the final scene of the film, the various Expendables gather together at their favorite bar, drinking and hanging out and celebrating their latest victory. Stallone’s Barney Ross encounters Schwarzenegger’s Trench Mauser and Trench’s sidekick, Jet Li’s Yin Yang, getting cozy. Barney advises them to “get a room.” The ribbing only causes Trench and Yang to tighten their embrace. “We don’t need a room,” Trench laughs back.

It’s a throwaway moment that could go over some viewers’ heads, but according to director Patrick Hughes, it’s confirmation that Trench and Yang are dating. “I believe they are,” he tells Grantland, in a tone described as if the filmmaker “just got away with something amazing.”

Schwarzenegger and Li’s on-screen relationship is barely explored in “Expendables 3,” as the two are relegated to little more than glorified cameos, Li especially. And it’s not likely to be the subject of an “Expendables 4,” if such a movie even comes to pass; ...

The Mountain From ‘Game Of Thrones’ Just Won Europe’s Strongest Man

by 22 mins ago

Gregor Clegane is no longer just the strongest man in Westeros: he’s the strongest man in all of Europe.

Hafþór Björnsson, who plays the infamous Clegane (a.k.a. The Mountain) on “Game of Thrones,” just won this year’s Europe’s Strongest Man competition.

Björnsson had already laid claim to being the second strongest man in the world, but this was his first European title. Like his “Thrones” character, he took on all challengers and left none standing, placing in first in three major categories: deadlifting; atlas stones; and the forward hold of Thor’s hammer (yes, seriously).

You can watch the video below for highlights of Björnsson’s incredible and kind of terrifying showing. And his challengers can count themselves lucky that they left out (potential spoilers) the teeth-smahsing and eye-gouging competitions this year, because you know Björnsson would’ve killed in that, too.

And no, Tyrion wasn’t in the crowd, but if he was, I’m sure his face would’ve been something like this.

Johnny Manziel Flipped The Bird On National TV Last Night

by 29 mins ago

Oh, Johnny. Sweet, innocent Johnny Manziel. You finally get your big Monday night debut playing for an (albeit spotty) NFL team, and what do you do to show the world you’re the real deal? You flash your middle finger like a middle schooler. C’mon, man.

During the Browns vs. Redskins preseason game last night, things got heated. The first time Manziel got sacked, Redskins players were shown making the money sign, taunting the former Heisman trophy winner. So late in the third quarter, after Mr. Football threw an incomplete pass near the Redskins sideline, he appeared to exchange some words with Washington players.

As Manziel jogged back to the Cleveland huddle, he flipped the bird over his shoulder in their direction. Because this is 2014 and ESPN was televising the game, the gesture was immediately seen by everyone watching.

johnny-finger-blur@CharlesRobinson

In a postgame press conference, Manziel expressed his regret, saying he simply lost his composure: “I should’ve been smarter. It was a Monday Night Football game — the cameras were solidly on me.” You got that right.

This doesn’t help Manziel’s fight for the Browns starting quarterback position, either. Even though Cleveland’s other QB, Brian Hoyer, suffered just as much in last night’s 24-23 loss to Washington, Manziel’s immature gesture makes him even less appealing for Browns fans and coaches. “It does not sit well,” Browns coach Mike Pettine said of the rookie’s slip-up. “I was informed of it after the game and it’s disappointing. Because what we ...

The 7 ‘Harry Potter’ Stories J.K. Rowling Must NEVER Release

by 6 mins ago

Ask most “Harry Potter” fans, and they’ll agree: J.K. Rowling returning to the Wizarding World with new short stories is very good, and very fun.

In the past two months, Rowling released a follow-up to the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” epilogue, penned from the perspective of Rita Skeeter. Yesterday, she released a short biography centered on Celestina Warbeck, aka the Singing Sorceress. These new entries in the “Harry Potter” universe are more than welcome. If Rowling wants to continue expanding the universe past the events of “Deathly Hallows,” we’re more than happy to keep checking in on Harry, Hermione, Ron and the rest.

However, we encourage Rowling to mind the words of Uncle Ben: “With great power, comes great responsibility.” There are some “Harry Potter” follow-ups that should never be told. There are some stories too heartbreaking to reveal. Some secrets must stay buried forever.

These are the seven “Harry Potter” stories that Rowling must never release.

(Warning: Things are about to get dark.)

1. Surprise! Wizard Prankster Fred Weasley Still Alive!

As it turns out, Fred did not die at the Battle of Hogwarts. He faked his death, with the help of twin brother George, as part of an elaborate prank revealed during the brothers’ 50th birthday. Until that revelation, the two had been “Christian Bale-ing it,” ala “The Prestige.” Upon returning to public life, Fred was reinstated as official co-owner of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, leaving younger brother Ron without ...

Sorry, Mom—This Trend Is Coming Back In A Big Way

by 9 mins ago

Over the weekend, two of our faves: Katy Perry and Lady Gaga got their noses pierced. Well, Katy pierced her right nostril, and Gaga went up a gauge with her septum piercing. In light of these recent events, we’re re-examining the trend, which is making a comeback in a big way.

Quick History Lesson: The art of nose piercing has it roots in Eastern religion.

In India, the practice dates back to the 16th century, where the practice of piercing one’s nose connotes a young woman’s marriage status, family status and financial worth. It also has roots in Indian religion, where the piercing is not only seen as a way of honoring Parvati, the Hindi goddess of love, devotion and marriage, but also of Ayurvedic beliefs. The left nostril in Ayurveda is linked with the female reproductive organs, and is thought to ease menstrual pain, and to make childbirth easier, thus making it an ideal spot for nose piercings.

In Muslim culture, things are slightly more complicated. There are conflicting beliefs about whether or not it’s permissible to pierce and adorn one’s body according to Islam. Ultimately, though, the piercings are seen as visible shorthand to demonstrate certain cultural values associated with religion or social mores in eastern society.

In western culture, nose piercings don’t have any significance attached to them other than being decorative. They’re seen more as an ornamental fashion statement and a good way to upset your parents (sorry, mom). That’s not ...

He Thinks He’s So Funny
James Franco must not have wanted to get his pants wet when he took on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, because he wasn’t wearing any. Judging by his Moby Dick shirt and the fact that he covered his private parts with a sheet of yellow paper with the names of Zach Braff, Joey King and Keegan Allen, his decision to go pantsless definitely was for added LOLs. David Letterman Remembers Robin Williams: ‘I Had No Idea That The Man Was In Pain’

by 15 mins ago

David Letterman was friends with Robin Williams for nearly 40 years. In fact, on his Monday night show, Letterman said that Williams helped give him his big break in TV when the late comedian offered Dave a small walk-on role on “Mork & Mindy” more than 35 years ago.

With his show back on the air after a summer break, Letterman spent 10 minutes paying tribute to his friend, reminiscing about their long relationship, the first time he saw Williams perform stand-up and lamenting that he had no idea Williams, who committed suicide last week, was in so much pain.

“It’s like nothing we had never seen before, nothing we had ever imagined before,” he said of of Williams’ late 1970s debut at Los Angeles’ Comedy Store with a set of his legendarily high-energy, stream-of-consciousness routines. “We’re like morning dew, he comes in like a hurricane … And then he finishes and I thought, ‘Oh that’s it, they’re gonna have to put an end to showbusiness because what could happen after this?’… We didn’t approach him because we were afraid of him. Honest to God you thought, ‘Holy crap, there goes my chance in show business because of this guy.’”

With more than 50 appearances on Letterman’s show, the host said Williams was one of his kindest, easiest guests. “Two things would happen: One, I didn’t have to do anything – all I had to do was sit here and watch the machine,” Letterman said. “And two, people would watch. If ...
