Wrathschild’s ‘Angeles’ Video: L.A. Is One Unforgiving Mistress

by 12 mins ago

“Take my soul I want to let you/ Wish that I had never met you,” sing Simon Curtis and Ro “Wolfy” Danishei of Wrathschild in their new video for “Angeles.” And no, they’re not singing about some cruel, unforgiving mistress they just don’t know how to shake — well, at least not a human one.

The track, which begins all simple and percussive à la Lorde’s “Royals” only to transcend to a more ethereal sonic landscape, is all about loving the city of Los Angeles, even when it doesn’t love you back.

Did I say “loving”? I should probably say “worshiping,” as the follow-up to April’s “Fall Into Love” sees the electro-pop duo embarking on a legit pilgrimage for answers through the city’s streets. Like any good religious experience, the quest ends in a host of psychedelic visions.

“You could say the song is our diary, our experience. It’s an anthem dedicated to that feeling of loving and loathing Los Angeles,” Simon told The Advocate in a recent interview. “It’s bittersweet, but it’s still really hopeful,” Wolfy elaborated. As someone who’s been in approximately one healthy relationship that has lasted longer than three months, I can relate.

Look for Wrathschild’s debut EP, which Wolfy and Simon are reportedly putting the finishing touches on as we speak.

Taylor Swift Outlines ‘The Only Real Risk’ To Pop Music

by 1 min ago

As online streaming and piracy drive traditional album sales to near-record lows, it may be hard to look into the future of the music industry and not grimace. But leave it to Taylor Swift to always keep things positive.

In an op-ed published in the online edition of The Wall Street Journal, Swift talks about why, despite all the numbers and statistics, she’ll always be an “enthusiastic optimist.” Not only does she refuse to think this ship will sink, she seems to see where it’s heading, and likes the look of it, boldly proclaiming, “the music industry is not dying… it’s just coming alive.”

You see, in her mind, she views slumping sales as a challenge to artists put their “heart and soul” to create albums that hit fans “like an arrow through the heart” and “allowed them to feel like they aren’t alone in feeling so alone.” In other words, music so damn good they can’t not buy their album.

“The way I see it, fans view music the way they view their relationships. Some music is just for fun, a passing fling (the ones they dance to at clubs and parties for a month while the song is a huge radio hit, that they will soon forget they ever danced to). Some songs and albums represent seasons of our lives, like relationships that we hold dear in our memories but had their time and place in the past,” she wrote. “However, some artists will be like ...

HAIM Team Up With ASAP Ferg For Banging New Version Of ‘My Song 5′

by 5 mins ago

I’m not going to say we’re psychic over here at MTV News but… We kind of are. Back in October we highlighted HAIM’s rap game status on stand-out track “My Song 5,” off of Days Are Gone, and now the band of sisters has gone and released a new version of the track featuring none other than ASAP Ferg. Nostradamus = Us.

HAIM dropped the collab — which includes a new verse from Ferg — on their Tumblr Monday (July 7) and if it wasn’t already a banger, there’s no denying it now.

Common Finally Admits His ‘War’ With Drake Was Over Serena Williams

by 1 min ago

When Common and Drake threw some shots at one another back in 2011 and early 2012, it seemed to be one of two things — or a combination of them: Com was looking to create some buzz around his new album, The Dreamer/The Believer; and Drake’s association with Common’s ex, Serena Williams, was rubbing him the wrong way.

Now, Common is opening up about the beef.

“For me, I think it was an emotional thing,” the Chicago native told VladTV. “Meaning, I was feeling like, at that time, I think it was the Drake-Serena situation — I ain’t know what was going on with that. And I ain’t know if he was throwing things, shots at me. You know, this my ex, and we kinda, you know, going our separate ways. Unfortunately, the war might have been over a girl, even though at the time I never said that.”

“But it wasn’t totally that,” he added. “It was more or less kind of like, man, do you respect me? ‘Cause I actually like you as an artist; that’s what I was thinking about Drake. Then it eventually became where I think he was like, Look, man, I feel you disrespecting me, too.”

Eventually, the two crossed paths, talked it out like adults, and put their issues in the past. They even partied together.

“I look back on it and say I’m glad it never escalated to a physical thing,” Common, who will be dropping his new album, Nobody’s Smiling, ...

Ariana Grande Teases ‘Best Mistake’ Featuring Big Sean: Listen Now

by 23 mins ago

Ariana Grande is certainly in a giving mood today.

The “Problem” singer treated her fans to not only the “Star Wars”-themed lyric video for “Break Free,” but also gave them a little tease of “one of her favorites on the album,” “Best Mistake” featuring Big Sean.

In the clip, Ariana’s smooth, yet powerful vocals stomp over a mid-tempo heavy drum beat as she contemplates ending a relationship.

“Break-up, make-up, total waste of time/ Can we please make up our minds,” she sings.

This isn’t the first time Ariana has teamed up with Big Sean, who, unfortunately, we don’t hear in the tease. The two collaborated on Ariana’s track, “Right There,” off her debut album, Yours Truly and he is featured in her “Problem” video alongside Iggy Azalea.

Arianators better get used to these short teases since Ariana tweeted that there “will be more previews coming” of songs off her album, My Everything, which drops August 25, one day after she takes the stage to perform “Break Free” at the Video Music Awards.

Ariana teamed up with several artists on her upcoming sophomore effort, including Childish Gambino, The Weeknd, A$AP Ferg and Harry Styles who wrote a song particularly for the pop diva.

“I was at the studio one day and he was there, and literally, [songwriters] Johan [Carlsson] and Savan [Kotecha] were like, ‘Hey, do you want to write something for Ariana?’ And he was like, ‘Sure, mate.’ And he just did,” Ariana said ...

You Won’t Recognize Don Cheadle As Miles Davis From An Upcoming Biopic

by 6 mins ago

Don Cheadle’s dream to bring the story of famed jazz trumpeter Miles Davis to the big screen is finally becoming a reality.

The “Iron Man 3″ actor is making his directorial debut with “Miles Ahead,” an independently funded biopic about Davis’ return to music after a five year hiatus. The film just began filming, and EW posted the first picture of Cheadle in costume.

The project still requires some additional funding, so Cheadle has started an Indiegogo campaign for fill the gap.

Writer/editor for MTV and lifelong film junkie. If it involves cowboys, spies, or hitmen, I'm there. All three would be ideal.

Robin Hibbard-Coulter Is Facing An Entirely New ‘Challenge’: A Baby!

by 22 mins ago

With her losing streak on “The Challenge” a distant memory, Robin Hibbard-Coulter has moved on to better (and smaller) things. Namely, a wee little bun in the oven!

The 2004 “Real World: San Diego” alum announced the news via Twitter late last week with a sonogram photo — and the cutest caption ever:

That’s right — no more navigating slippery slopes and scaling shipwrecked boats for this married woman, who just finished her first trimester. Luckily, former party girl Robin is no stranger to the twists and turns of mommyhood — she just celebrated her son’s fifth birthday, complete with only the best in superhero loot and Transformers toys.

While Robin waits for her bump to finally pop, leave your congrats for her in the comments, along with your best birthday wishes for her first-born kiddo!

Ariana Grande Seriously Nerds Out With ‘Star Wars’-Themed ‘Break Free’ Lyric Video

by 26 mins ago

Like mother, like daughter — Ariana Grande‘s new lyric video for “Break Free” is “Star Wars”-themed, and we’re guessing her mom, Joan, is pretty stoked right now.

Grande dropped the video for the dance-y, Zedd-featuring track Tuesday (July 7) — off of upcoming record My Everything — and those of you who haven’t being slumbering under a stone for the last 30+ years will immediately recognize the scrolling text over the star-studded background as a crib on the opening sequence of the sci-fi classic.

Grande is no stranger to the film (I mean, who really is?) — last month, she posted a video of her mom going on a seriously inside-baseball rant about “Star Wars” to Instagram. She’s also said that “Break Free” was inspired by likes of campy sci-fi film “Barbarella.”

Dare we say it…? Nerd alert!

Check out the video above and her live debut of the jam on “Total Ariana Live” below:

Justin Bieber Released His First Single 5 Years Ago Today: Here’s Proof That He’s Still The Same Kid

by 29 mins ago

Do you remember what you were doing when you first heard Justin Bieber? If you don’t, it’s OK because it was FIVE years ago — and I know my memory doesn’t have enough gigs to remember that far back.

Exactly 1,825 days ago, Justin released his very first single, “One Time,” off his debut, My World. Half a decade later, he’s dressing sharply in shiny suits, cruising on yachts and occasionally causing trouble in fancy cars — all of which seems to imply that he’s changed a lot. But, still, when you go back to the “One Time” video, you realize he’s the same old kid in a lot of ways.

Baby Bieber hangs around with pal Ryan Butler in his first music video.

Years later, he’s still lounging around with Ryan (this time for Madison Beer’s debut video, “Melodies”). Grown.

one time 2

Usher — Bieber’s mentor — had more of a presence in his early music, playing a part in the “One Time” video as the cool adult friend who puts up with Justin’s shenanigans.

Now when Biebs throws a house party, he invites Nicki Minaj instead.

In the video, Justin rides a skateboard around a pool.

In 2014, Bieber takes his hobby to the skate park (it’s safer that way), but it’s proof that Justin is still the ...

These Celebrities Are Navigating Their Own ‘Virgin Territory’

by 19 mins ago

Virginity is no longer that topic everyone wants to avoid. As MTV’s upcoming docu-seriesVirgin Territory” will show you, more and more folks are opening up about their V-card status and the struggles that come with hanging on to it.

That includes celebrities (stars — they’re just like US!). But sometimes, an A-lister’s declaration of abstinence backfires. Remember Britney Spears? The Queen of Pop wasn’t that innocent. And let’s not even discuss the Jonas Brothers (RIP). On occasion, though, some stars can serve as inspiration to those navigating their own virgin territory, like these reportedly celibate celebs:

jordinsparks

Jordin Sparks
The “American Idol” winner has been open about saving herself for marriage, even staunchly defending those who wear purity rings during the 2008 Video Music Awards. Jordin is now in a serious relationship with pop artist Jason Derulo, who is reportedly feeling the pressure to propose.

chetcannon

Chet Cannon
Coming from a strong Mormon background, Chet joined MTV’s “Real World: Brooklyn” in the hopes of convincing others that “Mormons are fun” despite abstaining from alcohol and premarital sex. He did just that and then some: Chet is now engaged to his adorable fiancé Danielle Paxton!

Julianne Hough
The actress and two-time “Dancing with the Stars” champion was also raised Mormon and once said, “I want to be with that special person. I think [the choice] to have sex before marriage is an individual one, but if you’re ...
